rotc

in case I dont get accepted into the air force academy
what is the difference between airforce rotc programs at different colleges and are some better than others?

Yah, it depends on the detachment. I want to go to UofM's det. 390 because UofM is my home state university and they have awesome stats for getting a pilot slot (like everyone that wants one gets one basically).

Usually the bigger state schools have better programs (not always the case), however you should visit/ contact the AFROTC det at each school.

If you would like to know about AFROTC or the whole Academy process from a cadet and someone who went through it last year, my AIM screenname is spotlf87. I am always willing to talk.

embry riddle has a good once. they actually have a contract with the USAFA to train the USAFA pilots to get their PPL.

I visited the Academy in October and the cadet that gave me the tour told me that the Academy actually had more than enough pilot slots for the number of people that wanted to be a pilot while ROTC received very few pilot slots. He actually said that they were going around asking other cadets if they were sure they didn't want pilot slots. :)

Why do people think that ROTC does not receive many pilot slots? It's about the same as the academy, everyone that wants one, gets one. My ALO specifically told me if you are going to the Academy just to get a slot than I'm going to be miserable for 4 years. He told me to go through ROTC, maintain above a 3.0, stay involved and a pilot slot is as good as mine...

Either way you go, you aren't guarenteed a slot. Remember you don't join the Air Force to fly, you join the Air Force to serve your country, and you will be given the job that Big Blue wants you to have...

Percentages...Rotc has more qualified cadets for (nearly) the same amount of slots. If you do well at either USAFA or ROTC and are PQed, you will get a slot.

Hell, at USAFA you can just be a warm body and get a pilot slot. Really, you can have a 2.3 GPA and average everything and get the slot no problem. ROTC, you do need good grades and do well to get the slot.

Yes, you should not come for just the pilot slot, but if that's how you want to serve your country, I believe, personally, that this is the best way.
