Algebra 2 highest math completed in high school
no SAT/ACT ever taken
I want to focus on Computer Science with a concentration in Cyber security or programming/networks (specifically assembly, C)
I ran a business (unrelated field, marketing) in high school and a bit after high school
Liberty University
Capella University
Western Governor’s University
I was looking at these three but not exactly what I want
Considering taking classes in community just to mini-transfer (not the full 60 credits to transfer to a UC, for example).
any advice on which college I should be aiming at? Online preferable or in northern California.
Champlain College in Vermont has an excellent program in Cybersecurity… the feds hire lots of their graduates. They also have quite a few online programs.
Consider Portland State. PSU has a strong computer science program, and an unusually large number of older students - more than 27% of undergraduates are your age or older. As a CA resident you could attend for the more affordable WUE exchange rate. And flights between NorCal and Portland are quick and easy. PSU does offer a lot of online sections of classes, and there are several bachelor’s degrees that can be completed entirely online, but CS is not one of those. (It might be possible to start in an online program initially, though, if you’re not ready to relocate.)
Did you consider one of those code academy boot camps? I would think the skills you want are quite specific, and you may neither want nor need a 4 year degree, with gen ed requirements, at this point in your life.
I would not recommend that anybody ever attend Liberty University unless they are evangelicals who have issues with LGBTQ rights, and Capella’s only virtue is that it is not as bad as Phoenix and is perhaps not the worst for-profit “university”. If you are looking to do most of your degree online, so it is much better to do an online degree program provided by a traditional brick-and-mortar university. The colleges proposed by other posters are all excellent choices.
PS. For-profits have an abysmal graduation rate, as well as many types of unethical behaviors.
I was admitted into University of Maryland University College. Anybody have any resources, websites, or knowledge what colleges/universities I can transfer into at a later time? 2 to 2-1/2 years in, perhaps, as I am wanting to get into a different/better (biased/subjective towards C programming especially) Computer Science degree program somewhere else. I’m going to take 9 credits per semester. They’re relatively inexpensive – approximately $12,000 per year / 3 semesters / 9 credits per semester. Also, their program is geared towards mainly Java/C++/Graphics (think NASA, NVIDIA type of the careers).
You are 30 so you must have some idea where you’d like to live and work after you graduate. I’d encourage you to study in that area so you can snag jobs/internships while a student and open post-BS job opportunities.
I am going to Make School (check out makeschool.com), University of Maryland University College, or Thomas Edison State University.
Make School is great for iOS development as well as front-end and back-end web development.
University of Maryland University College what appears to be a decent Software Development and Security program.
Thomas Edison State University seems to be great at first glance but it’s a BA in CS. They still require upper-level math.
TESU is my first choice because they’re flexible and have nice courses available to take. I might double major if I can afford it.
Make School is my second choice because they have an ISA (income sharing agreement) and they teach specialized skills to land a $100k to $200k job here in the bay area in California. The only downside is that I have to go in person and it’s in the financial district in San Francisco. It will be a pain to go to this school.
University of Maryland University College is my third choice. I do not want to work for NASA/Nvidia applying calculus while working on vectors and graphics manipulation and GPU type of work. This is for their CS program. They seem to kind of lack from my perspective but that’s open to interpretation past biases.
And yes, I was accepted into Kenzie Academy, They e-mailed the ISA agreement to me but I think that’s going to eat up my income. It’s a one year program. This is a fourth option that I have.
