I don’t know that you necessarily need a “standout”, though. If possible, stick to a state where you think you might reasonably live post-graduation or your home state. Things change, of course, but if your home big university has a good program, don’t worry about Cornell.
Most familiar with Cornell and Purdue. Both large schools but super for the major. As noted above, almost all majors become more intimate as a students gets into upper level classes. Don’t let the size scare you off.
For strong students, the big state Us have honors college and live/learn communities to make it feel more intimate as well.
(@RichInPitt - Purdue is back on top for Ag Eng this year ; ))
Besides Wisconsin and Cornell, what other schools do you view as having strong dairy programs? My kid is specifically interested in dairy and is looking at Minnesota, Michigan State, Iowa State, Virginia Tech, Penn State, and Iowa State. Are you familiar with the reputations of any of their dairy programs?
UC-Davis
Purdue
Michigan State
Penn State
Iowa State
Thanks!
