AHH!! MAJOR help needed for Rice /Baylor Application

Okay, so it's really not as bad as it sounds but I need some advice. You guys know the question about outside of academic interest what do you enjoy most? Well, I wrote about tutoring algebra ii and trig because seriously, that's what I do all the time and it's something I sincerely enjoy. But does TUTORING MATH fall too much under "academics?" Because I'm tutoring an academic subject? B/c if I was tutuoring piano or something, I would have this dilemna.

Since the question specifically says "outside of academic interest" and math is considered to be academic, I think that maybe you should choose another interest, like an extracurricular activity you sincerely enjoy.

I think it's ok. If that's what you enjoy most, write about it.

If "outside of academics" that is what you enjoy the "most," I would have to seriously question your ability to enjoy life.

Individuals have different methods of enjoying life.

MIT app had a similar essay. I think the strategy is to avoid academics as much as possible. Think of something unique (non-academic) that will make you stand out. However, if you want to write about tutoring math, focus completely on tutoring and avoid emphasis on math as much as you can. You can write on how you have been wanting to make a difference in someone's life since when you were little, and tutoring gave you the most pleasure because blahblahblha...Then try to link this whole thing to your dream of becoming a doctor to help people. Just try to make small things big. You can even make this a narrative by focusing on one day of tutoring and zoom out to your whole life's goal in making a difference in someone's life. :)

its fine. tutoring is more social than academic.

what did some of you put for "what do you find most challenging?"

doesn't matter anymore, I changed the essay to a completely different subject and decided it was actually written better than the first one. thanks for your help and concerns guys.

And for an earlier comment taht questioned about my social life cuz I like tutoring, well tutoring makes me feel really good about myself cuz I helped two people pull from failing grades to As and Bs. So yeah, i do enjoy life because I enjoy it most when others around me enjoy it with me. :)

Oh yay, congrats on getting a better essay in the end. :D

I understand how you like tutoring a lot, a lot of my people at my school enjoy community service because it gives them great joy to help others and see the difference they can make in someone else's life. More props to you.

Yay, tutoring is fun! And if you want to keep doing it, there are a few groups at rice that run tutoring sessions at elementary schools in the area, plus there are opportunities to be a tutor for your fellow college students as well.
