Please let me no what you think. I no some of those schools are big reaches. Constructive Criticism is welcomed :)

From the schools that I know...

UMassAmherst-realistic
Clemson-realistic
Villanova-reach

Obviously, getting your SAT's up would help....and applying early admission for all if the school offers it.

Good luck

I don't know too much about some of these schools. But get some definite matches/safeties. Don't risk applying to schools that might be slight reaches regardless of realistic they might seem.

asdfjkl1 are any schools on my list realistic in your opinion? and are you saying that i should not even bother applying to the other ones?

I'm not a chancer. haha. I mean, I'm not saying that some are un-realistic. But, you need to apply to schools where you're basically 60%-100% in as well. I know it's not as desirable. But, you need a safety gauge. I applied to many schools (and got in to all technically speaking) and I will be attending one of my 'safeties' next year due to $$$$. Money matters...

Yes I realize that. Fortunately my parents told me that money is not an issue. Coastal Carolina, UMASS, and University of South Carolina im banking on acceptance. Im hoping having legacy in Clemson will give me an edge as well. Clemson is my top choice. Do you think I have a shot at clemson?

I've only heard of it in passing. Wait for others here to chance you. :)

haha ya hopefully others will chance me.

you definitely can do clemson. I have around the same stats as you but you have even more EC's. I've been told that Clemson is most likely a safely for me, and with legacy you will probably have an edge. I think villanova may be a reach but not out of the question. They may like you because you're from the east. I think Chapel Hill and UVa will be your biggest reaches. Try to get higher on the SAT and maybe think about SAT II's. I know UVa considers them. Good Luck!!

UNC Chapel Hill - Rejected
Clemson - Accepted
University of South Carolina - Accepted
Coastal Carolina -Accepted
UMASS Amherst - Accepted
University of Delaware - Accepted
Villanova - Waitlisted
Penn State - Accepted
Elon - Accepted
University of Virginia - Rejected
University of Georgia - Accepted

You might want to raise your SAT scores, but that's pretty much only for UVa. Your GPA is also low, but your rank might show that it's relative.

Thanks for all your advice :)
Eberyone else feel free to keep giving me it lol

bump

i would really like more opinions

UNC Chapel Hill- Big reach. Out of state is like trying to get into Duke
Clemson- match. You fall into their upper tier of test scores and will easily have one of the highest GPAs. You're ECs are strong, you're legacy. There is a chance you won't get in, but I think that as long as all of your material (essays and recs) are good you should be in.
University of South Carolina- High match/ Get the CR+Math over 1200 and you should be fine.
Coastal Carolina-safety. You'd be in the upper echelon of all of th
UMASS Amherst- Match
University of Delaware- Match/High Match. I hesitate to call you a match unless you get over 1200. If you hit that milestone you're definitely a match
Villanova- Reach. They get a lot of 4.0s. You're test scores are bottom 25. you'd need to get up about a 1280 and you could consider it feasible.
Penn State-high match. Penn State loves GPA, which you definitely have. The test scores can still hurt you. You'lll definitely get into one of the satellite campuses (like Altoona), but UP isn't an absolute certainty. Get the CR+Math over 1200 and you'll be in great shape there.
Elon-- Reach. Same as a lot. Low scores and your GPA isn't great. Get to 1200 and it becomes very feasible.
University of Virginia- Huge reach. Getting in here from OOS is like trying to get ivy.
University of Georgia- Reach. Test scores and out of state is going to hurt you a lot. Your GPA isn't something unheard of there.

Overall, you should try to get your CR to 600. That wiill open up a lot of doors for you. Later on I'll post some schools that you might want to look at for safeties/matches.

I just realized that your Unweighted GPA is 3.4. That would make Penn State a reach, Delaware a low reach, and Coastal Carolina a low match. Also disregard what I said about each school regarding GPA.

You seem to be looking at big, southern schools so I'll try to stick there. If you don't really care where it is I can go further north like NY or west like Ohio. Just say if you don't mind.

Temple in Philly is a safety school that you may want to take a look at, though it's in a city and I'm not sure what you think about that.

Drexel, also in Philadelphia, would probably be a match for you

I know they're rivals and everything, but based on the schools you listed you'd
probably like Auburn a lot, and that's definitely a match for you. If you want a big school with good athletics and academics you should definitely take a look there. Oh, and I know what it's like having family go to a rival school of a school that you're considering: I have 5 family members who graduated or are attending Michigan and I'm looking at Ohio State! But yeah, based on the type of schools that you listed I think you'd like Auburn a lot.

There are the penn state satellite campuses. When you apply to penn state University park you are also applying there. I have no doubt that you'll get in. I think it's Happy Valley that's very, very close by and if you work hard you'll probab

Eastern Caronlina is another school that could be a match for you. They have a really big student body and some D1 sports if that's what youre interested in (including D1-A football team that isn't very good).

Now for the schools I know a lot about: Florida schools. A lot of schools down here would match what you seem to be looking for.

Florida Atlantic is a safety for you that I definitely think you should take a close look at. It's in Boca Raton, which is about a twenty minutes from West Palm Beach (which has a downtown called City Place which is very nice), 20 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale, and an hour from Miami. Boca is heavily populated but it is definitely not a city atmosphere. I don't know if you're looking for a college town, but Boca is definitely not one. You'll see more University of Florida and FSU stickers there than you'll see FAU. They have D1 football (not too good). There are a decent amount of commuters but from what I've seen there is definitely a campus there, and a pretty nice one at that.

There is also the Honors College at FAU whose construction is nearing completion. It's located in Abacoa, Jupiter, about 35-40 minutes from the main campus. The campus is absolutely beautiful so far. It's in an excellent area (Abacoa) which, while it certainly is not a college town, there is tons of stuff to do. There are fairs, restaurants and even a minor league baseball stadium. If you do get bored, West Palm is 15 minutes away, Ft. Lauderdale is about an hour, and miami is an hour and a half to 2 hrs. The best thing about it, though, is that Scripps Pharmaceuticals is taking a big part in the campus. The curriculum for sciences will have a lot of real world things and be integrated with Scripps. Basically, Scripps plans to open a lot of unique opportunities for the science students at the honors college.

University of South Florida in tampa is nice. They have an excellent division one football team, if that's what you're interested in. It's an up and coming school. It gets better and better every year. It's integrated right into the city of Tampa Bay, which needless to say has a lot to do. I'd call it a match for you.

I saved the best for last: Florida State. This has everything you seem to be looking for. Solid academics, big campus, great athletics, and it has somewhat of a college town. Is located in/near Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. Needless to say, there is a lot of school pride. It's basically the stereotypical college experience there: big campus, a lot of pride, etc. I don't want to get you too excited, I'd call it a high match. If you can get that CR score up you'll be in awesome shape to get in there.

thanks for all your advice. Right now the states Im looking at are Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, North/South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Wont my weighted GPA be considered more greatly then my unweighted GPA?

No. Unweighted is more important because it's what colleges use to make their own weighted gpa. It doesn't really make a difference anyways. A 4.0 weighted is completely different than a 4.0 unweighted.

Ya i no that a 4.0 weighted is different from a 4.0 unweighted.

But I mean say I have an uw of 3.4 and a w of 4.0 and someone else has an uw of 3.7 but a w of 3.9

Wouldnt I technically be in a better position then them since my weighted is higher

bump

more opinions please. especially your thoughts on Clemson :)

Still I'd say no go for Clemson, we'll wait and see when you get the next SAT's back (how do you think you did?). But I also noticed that you have a lack of AP's (I know its because of Australia but still) and your math course I'd say isnt that challenging and is probaly a year behind.

pml161991,

I have spoken several times with our guidance director about the weighted versus unweighted GPA. He tells me that what many colleges do is take your transcript and put a line through anything that is not a core class. There are exceptions, of course, such as the person who takes lots of art because he plans to major in art or the kid who takes welding to prepare himself for engineering.

Colleges look at the unweighted GPA. They also look at your strength of schedule. There are lots of kids in my son's graduating class, for example, who could be very disappointed come next April when they are rejected by top schools. Why? They did not take the stronger schedules. Some just realized that, and they plan to take extra APs, hoping that will be impressive.

Remember, you can still pull up your GPA/SAT in the first few months of your senior year. And if you do, your chances for Clemson will increase.
