This may be a ridiculous question, but--how difficult is it to get a window unit in the freshman dorms? And is it necessary?

Also, is it worth going for the Monroe dorm rather than taking chances with the other freshman options?

Also, is it worth going for the Monroe dorm rather than taking chances with the other freshman options?

It's really not that difficult to get an window unit. The most difficult thing would probably be for you to get your doctor to sign it, if you're completely making things up. If you have general allergies, your doctor will likely sign it, and you will get clearance to have a window unit.

I don't know anyone who applied to get a window unit that got rejected.

Of course, you are only applying for the right to have a window unit; you must purchase it yourself.

For August/most of September, it can get pretty hot. That being said, a ton of people in Monroe didn't have a window a/c unit and did just fine. If you can get one, though, I would recommend it.

If you have the opportunity to live in Monroe, I would personally take it. Much better than some of the other options.

Do you need to pay any additional cost to hook up the a/c unit? Is an electrician required or does the school determine where the student is placed based on the medical note provided? Is there a size restriction for the unit? Sorry for all the questions! :)

Botetourt Complex
(Dinwiddie, Fauquier, Gooch, Nicholson, Spotswood)

all rooms

Height no greater than 17"

Window Air Conditioners

Room air conditioners are not permitted unless a medical exemption is provided by the Student Health Center to Residence Life prior to installation. Students should ask their physician to provide the Student Health Center with medical documentation of need for air conditioning, which must include the medications a student is currently taking.

Students must provide their own air conditioning unit, which must either be installed or inspected by staff from Facilities Management. Requests to schedule installation/removal of air conditioning units must be submitted in writing.

Only one air conditioner is allowed per student room. Room units must be wired for 110-120 volts and should not exceed 6,000 BTUs.

Failure to remove unapproved units may result in College judicial action.

Air conditioners are not permitted in the first floor of student rooms in Sorority Houses due to the presence of security screens.

Window size restrictions: Approximate heights of windows in Botetourt Complex are 17 inches, Randolph Complex window height is 20 inches and Fraternity Complex windows are non-standard sizes. Whirlpool makes a casement-slide unit that will fit the windows in the Fraternity Complex. Please see the following link for more detailed information about window size restrictions.

It doesn't require any additional cost to hook it up. You just put in a Work Order and they come and do it for you, free of charge. I believe, but somebody correct me if I'm wrong, that I got my housing assignment before the deadline to turn in the Window Unit Request Form; so if this is the case, you won't be placed anywhere based on your medical note, since you'll already have your housing assignment.
Inchoative - Thanks for the input. You are a wealth of information! :)

if you can, you should get an AC unit. I didn't have one my freshmen year and it can be kinda hot in August / September, and May.

it's rather easy to get an ac unit. really is, because most of us have allergies.

Yes, I most certainly have "allergies"... really, I do... :-P
