Two stories in this weeks AF Times. Making tougher cadets–Superintendent calls for more rigor, higher standards by 2007.

The mandatory “lights out” at 10:30 and breakfast will be mandatory also. I guess many skip it now. Fitness scores may start counting for class rank, beefing up foreign language requirement, more parades and replacing “personal development time” with “directed development time”.
Also adding 5 minutes to each class to shorten the school year by 8 days.

Second story-May revive Recognition.

Basicly it says the will bring it back, but it will not be hell week. Spot correct will be back also.

crap... Are we going to have to take more than 2 years of a foreign language because right now i'm in French and I really don't feel like taking more... Are they going to make it mroe than 2 years a requirement?

Are these changes final, 100% for sure going to happen?

I personally don't mind the mandatory lights out and breakfast, as I, from experience, know that breakfast is an important meal, but it still seems kind of restrictive, especially for those who feel otherwise.

Don't mind the fitness thing because I love to work out :)

I am uneasy about the beefed up foreign language requirement, I really don't like taking foreign languages. Do you know if the science and engineering majors will still have no language requirements?

The replacing "personal development time" with "directed development time" again seems like more unnecessary restrictiveness.

I don't really like adding 5 minutes to each class to shorten the school year by 8 days. I'd rather have the ~20 minutes of extra free time during the day (when I'll need it for homework, studying, etc.) than more days off during summer, but all of this is just speculation...as I obviously have no cadet life experience right now...

I love the fact that recognition is coming back! Mainly because one of the biggest reasons I chose to go to the AFA is to really challenge myself in life. It will certainly make it harder but the greater feeling of accomplishment in the end will make it all worth while.

You need to read your post above and think again about any decision to come to USAFA. You're worried about "restrictiveness?" Good one. You'd like a little more free time? That's nice. Do you want fries with that? Then, after worrying about restrictiveness and if you'll be forced to take a few classes that might not be your forte' (but the SecDef and lots of others think are important skills for ALL military officers), you say you want to come to USAFA because you enjoy a challenge. Like I said, keep thinking...

Well I honestly don't care either way...you're right and I'm well aware of all that; this thread is for discussing the changes and I'm just sharing my opinion (which I know no one gives a **** about in the military :) )...and I know it's way too early to open my mouth :p

"I personally don't mind the mandatory lights out..."

I'd like to hear you say that when you're just starting your homework at 10 because of a surprise mandatory briefing that takes up 3/4 of your night.

Some people need those extra hours after taps to pull decent grades. At least I do.
