airport transportation

Can anyone comment on the cab service in and around South Bend? With Fall Break quickly approaching, we need info about this expecially from current students. Freshman Son is flying in and out of South Bend Airport and will try to use cabs. Are they reliable? Is the cost too prohibitive? Will they pick up at dorms? Thanks for any help.

Cost isn't bad, usually pick up at main circle by Alumni Hall. Another option is if he has friends who have cars they can take him to the airport, it is not far at all (BTW, cabs aren't cost prohibitive, I think it was like 10 bucks last time I did it). I would offer to take him but I am leaving on Thursday which is probably too early for him, but if not, let me know.

We've had good luck with Coach USA limo service, which runs several times a day to Midway Airport in Chicago for $60 round trip. Booking in advance, we can take advantage of cheap Southwest flights. They pick up in the main circle and go straight to the airport. This break, we'll be getting our son home and back for roughly $160 or so with tax...not bad.

Thanks Irish for your very generous offer. Son does not really know upperclassmen with cars too well yet, plus his flight leaves on Sunday morn. and he thought that it might be asking a lot for someone to get up and take him to the airport. I assume that he could always have the cab pick him up at the Morris Inn. Can you tell me if most of the cab companies are reliable, in terms of picking up on time? Thanks for your info so far, at least he now knows about how much the cost will be.

Make sure he has some extra money because my memory is weak, but that is the cost I remember. As for which ones are reliable, I am not really sure as I rarely ever use them, but if he asks around I am sure there will be a good source on that. I haven't heard negatives about any of them recently, for what it is worth. There were complaints a while back about kids who went to parties and wanted rides back and them not being all that responsive to that but I tink that was partly because it wasn't worth going out there to give a $2 ride (and they had drunk kids in the back). For the airport it shouldn't be an issue I don't think.
