Alabama(8k) v. Tulane(34k)- Roll Tide v. Roll Wave

While I wait for my first choice, Vandy (WL), it is time to make a deposit! I have to choose between Bama 8k a year (total cost), vs Tulane at 34k a year.

Money is not a huge problem, but going to Bama would make grad school a lot more affordable. I love the social scenes of both schools, so the differences between the two socially really are not a factor. The differences in size also don't play a huge part in my decision.

The biggest factors, however, are the academics and value. Is it worth paying almost 25k a year to attend Tulane? Which school will give me the best opportunity to land a great job in finance/business? Are both schools academically comparable?

It's definitely a tough decision. I feel the urge to take the more prestigious school like Tulane, Wake, or UMiami (I've eliminated Wake and Miami), but I know I can get a good education almost anywhere. I guess my biggest concern is whether the school I choose to attend will give me the opportunity to attend a top notch grad school or land a great job after graduation.

Thanks in advance for the responses!

this is really dependent on your family circumstances and how much of a struggle the tuition would be.

Facing similar choices, my D went to the more expensive choice, feeling it was the better school. Fortunately, we were in the position to do this and are glad to do this for her. Howeve, it is a LOT of money.

If you want to go to grad school for business…MBA…the undergrad won’t really matter. All they care about are grades, GMAT, and quality work experience. I highly doubt that Tulane will make any difference at all for MBA admission over UA. Other than a small handful of schools, prestige is probably a bit over rated on CC.

If your family can easily afford Tulane and you like it the best, go there. If not, consider UA.

Roll tide! you can go to a great grad school from anywhere if you get good grades.

There is no way on earth you will get 26K MORE education at Tulane than Alabama ----if it was Vandy and you were rich then MAYBE, but Tulane is NOT worth that. I would be curious to know what you would pay at Wake.

*There is no way on earth you will get 26K MORE education at Tulane than Alabama *

Absolutely right. And when you multiply by 4 years, you’re not getting $100k more education either.

These are mid-tier schools, you’re not going to see that much difference…certainly not enough to justify more than a few thousand in difference. If Tulane were maybe just $5k per year, then fine. But, that much?? Oh my…no.

go to Bama…and enjoy a study abroad as well. (which, BTW, Bama will let you use your scholarship money for a semester abroad…so that’s about $11k towards a semester abroad (one semester’s worth of OOS tuition.)

I don’t know if Tulane is still struggling financially after Katrina (the eng’g dept was decimated), but I can tell you Bama is financially very strong.
