Alabama and Auburn

Ok so I have narrowed my college choices down to Alabama and Auburn. What are the big differences in them? Which college has better schools in what major? How difficult are the academics? What are the people like (as in what are the "cultures" like)? What's college/campus0 life like there? I appreciate any input guys.

Well, both my parents (and almost all of my aunts and uncles) graduated from U of Alabama, so I'm a tiny bit partial... but it really depends on what major you want. Alabama is generally better for engineering. Auburn is better for vet medicine and architecture. Both schools are big football schools... but if you're into baseball Bama is way better than AU. I don't really know about the other sports. Bama is also much better with scholarship money than Auburn is... Auburn is really stingy with their merit aid. Other than that... I dunno much. I've visited T-town and everything and it's nice- lots of history- and the student center (the Ferguson Center) is great. Auburn is in the middle of the country with nothing around it but cow pastures and corn fields... but once again, I'm partial to Bama anyways so you may not want to take my word on that, especially since I've never actually visited Auburn. Personally, I'm not applying to either one, since neither one actually has the major I want, but they're both good schools w/o a doubt, especially for Alabama, so it depends on what your major is and whether you want to spend the next four years shouting "War Eagle" or "Roll Tide"!

My brother lives in Birmingham. He says that you are either born to Auburn or Alabama. Choosing one or the other is not a rational choice.

Hey kjr - Are you from Alabama? Just wondering... because I never hear of OOS kids applying to Bama/Auburn...

tsdad - Yeah, especially if your family has a strong history with one school. This is a bloody rivalry in Alabama! You choose sides before you even understand what a college actually is!

It's quite the opposite Kathryn, I mean UA is going to have to rename itself the University of Texas-Tuscaloosa any day now so many Texans they've convinced to come here (Austin and A&M can only fit so many people).

Anyway, Auburn is better if you want to major in science or engineering and Alabama is better if you want to major in business, communication, or liberal arts and humanities. Social sciences, it's a push.

I have no personal experience with either school but my sister works for a large textbook publishing company and has visited a LOT of colleges all over the country with her job. She says she really likes the campus of Auburn and that the students there are some of the most friendly (and polite)she has encountered anywhere and appear to be really happy kids.

Both are pretty good party schools

kathryn: Yes I am OOS from TN

Anyone know of a website that shows what schools have good majors in what?

Are there no websites that list what schools are best in what majors? Thanks.

I'm sure you could solicit Alexandre for that kind of information.

LOL choosing between Alabama and Auburn is like choosing between USC and UCLA, you are born to like either one or the other.

I met graduates from both places. The intellectual ability of the U of Alabama-Tuscaloosa alumni was more impressive.
