Alabama and Mississippi Average SAT score is higher than Massachusetts And New York.

State-by-state SAT and ACT scores | Public Agenda

Hmm...

What are you implying?

Tennessee is higher then Alabama, Massachusetts, and New York. :D

Wisconsin is higher than Tennessee, Alabama, Massachusetts, and New York. But do you hear people dying to live there no.

Yet New York has a higher ACT than most; why is this?

In certain parts of the country, all students take the SAT; in other parts, all take the ACT. The former will have lower SAT scores and higher ACT scores (all students take SAT, only college-bound students who bother to work on testing take ACT) while the latter will have lower ACT and higher SAT scores (all students take ACT, only college-bound students who bother to work on testing take SAT).

I just want to get the heck out of this Republican, closed-minded, section of the state. If think Tennesee’s SAT is higher is because, we don’t HAVE to take the SAT but we are state mandated to take PLAN and the ACT.

one thing to look at it the participation rate (how many HS take the SAT)

This chart shows that MS and AL have very low participation rates, so maybe only the top-notch students actually take it, or maybe the dumb kids take the ACT (which doesnt look so good compared to the SAT average). Or maybe some states require the ACT, so most kids just stay focused on that or settle with their first score. Naturally, the smarter kids would see if they are a better SAT taker.

^^Bingo.

^and that graph proves my point.

In New York everyone takes the SAT, people hardly take the ACT. So the SAT pool will be lower obviously. By comparing the Northern States with the Southern, the North has higher ACT scores because they mostly take the SAT.

When you compare ACT scores of students from Alabama and Miss, those states are at or near the bottom, and Miss is actually at the bottom.

Let’s all find a standardized test and stick to it, or at least make them shorter because I need to take the PSAT,ACT,and SAT my Junior year. brain explodes

^If you survive a brain explosion they might accept you at Harvard. That’s a great hook I hear.

Finally, its AVERAGE SAT score. Not Median. Average is less accurate than median.

Median is generally considered to be better representative than mean. Neither is more “accurate,” as both are accurate mathematical measurements without a common objective standard to hold up to in order to see which is “more accurate.”

^^^I’m TOTALLY doing it then.

With populations that large, median is better.

The more you know.

I really doubt there’s going to be much difference between median and mean when you’re looking at such large populations and working with such a small scale.

The self selection is a vastly bigger issue.

Embarassing.

The reason that SAT scores are higher in Alabama and Mississippi is because only our brightest students take the SAT. The ACT is taken by everyone, so you get the high scores but also the low scores which bring down the average.

You are correct.
