Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, South Carolina Pre-Med

My midwest DD wants to go to college in the south. She has good grades and we have every reason to believe she will have a good ACT score. She wants to be a doctor. How are the pre-med programs at these schools?

Bama pre-med is very good and has very good pre-med advising. Bama writes Committee Letters as well, which are very important for med school acceptances.

My son is pre-med at Bama.

Bama also has a brand new mega-sized Science and Engineering Complex. Brand new classrooms, labs, facilities and equipment.

if your D gets high ACT scores and a strong GPA, then she’d also get a big merit scholarship. :)

You should go to UGA. It’s probably the most prestigious college followed by Clemson on the list. Athens is amazing. My cousin went to UGA premed, is basicly a genius, got a 4.0 in biochem/molecular bio and is now at columbia med school.

Clemson has fantastic majors in the sciences and engineering as well as any other non-liberal arts fields like nursing, education, business, architecture etc… Pre-med would definitely be a strong program at Clemson!

Let me know if you have any questions about Clemson! I’m a junior majoring in civil engineering.

I’m an Auburn student, so I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I would recommend the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for the medical field. My grandfather went there and became a doctor, and he to this day has nothing but praise for the school.

That said, War Eagle!

If pre med. Definitely consider Uab in Alabama. Uab.edu. Tier 1. If her scores etc are good she might qualify for blazer elite (28+act and 3.0 gpa)=15k per year against coa of 20-24k! Very very strong in sciences incredible research opportunities for research great honors colleges. UAB is home of the med school. About 11k undergrads premed advising is top notch beginning in freshman year. Seminars, mcat practice interview tech iques shadowing help with apps etc

Thanks for the responses. We went through the search process with DS a couple years ago, but he wanted a school either in the midwest (other outside of Illinois) or California. DD’s love of warm weather and country music is taking us in a different direction! At least we have found out that the colleges she is interested in (with the exception of UGA) are very generous with merit money, OOS tuition waivers etc.

On Columbus Day there was a huge college fair (over 10,000 students in attendance) at McCormick Place in downtown Chicago. Representatives from UA, Clemson and USC were all there and drawing interest. In fact, the UA advisor indicated that 78 kids from the Chicago area are in this years freshman class. UA is also holding a reception for prospective students and their parents later this month in suburban Chicago which we will attend. The Dean of one of the colleges, a parent of a current student and a student will all give presentations and answer questions.

Yes, and that’s just from the Chi area. Bama gets a good number of Illinois students. This fall’s frosh class was over 50% OOS! The entire school is now about 45% OOS.

Once your D has some test scores, it will be easier to determine where she’d get good-sized merit scholarships.

I would say Bama or Georgia. UAB is good, but if you abandon pre-med, which many, many students do, then you are at…UAB. Not that it’s bad, but I think the other two flagships have more to offer outside of pre-med.
