Alabama or Auburn for CS?

Hello, I am a West Point student that is considering Alabama or Auburn for my transfer. I had a 4.0 at the Academy and am not worried that I won’t get into either one. My questions are - Which is better for CS, Auburn or Alabama? Is there even a difference?

I’ve looked on many websites (college rankings, student reviews, etc.) and have come up with nothing. The only thing that I have found is an endless amount of complaints about the fraternity/sorority environments.

The reason for my transfer is my mother. She is a single mother that is not in the best of health and I chose to leave because I wanted to take care of her. Before anyone jumps to conclusions - No, this is not one of those cases where the parent(s) begged for the child to come back. I made the decision as an adult and am not dissapointed in any way because I know that I’ll be happy wherever I go. I have taken a few CS courses in my final semester (junior year) at West Point and found the major to be amazing.

I am originally from Alabama and I’m right in the middle of UA and Auburn. If I lived in Georgia and was close to Georgia Tech, that would be wonderful and I would definitely go there. However, I don’t live in Georgia. I don’t want to be stepping on the gas three hours away if something happens.

Every time that I have asked this question offline, I’ve been given advice that I should let my mother fend for herself and go wherever I want. I’m pretty tired of those conversations - my questions are simply what I have typed in my first few sentences. The only reason I explained the rest is because I didn’t want to repeat the whole “Why would you go to places like Alabama or Auburn with those grades” shabang.

Thank you all. CollegeConfidential has always given me good advice in the past because of the many intelligent and awesome people here. Hopefully, there are those experienced in Alabama/Auburn that can give some good responses to this momma’s boy.

Have you asked her if what you want to do will make her happier than if you continue at the USMA and become an officer in the Army?

Since you are a third year student at the USMA, you should check carefully on the policies of separation or withdrawal, since there may be requirement to repay the cost of education and/or serve as an enlisted soldier. Also, will you be able to pay for Alabama or Auburn until graduation if you do transfer?

Both Alabama and Auburn have a fairly large fraternity and sorority scene, though not the majority. About a quarter of men at each school are in fraternities, while more than a third of women at each school are in sororities.

Both Alabama and Auburn have Army ROTC units.
