What is the alcohol scene like at Bowdoin? Can a non drinker really fit in? Thanks.

I would first like to say, Bowdoin is kind of ‘in the middle of nowhere.’ Though people want to throw around that Bowdoin has downtown Maine street (which isn’t even all that great. It’s just a street that has like 5-7 long blocks and has an obvious end at the end of the 7th block). Furthermore, Portland is about 30-45 minutes away but unless you have a car, it can be a hassle. A can ride from Bowdoin to Portland is $60. And a ticket at the 7/11 store is about 20-30$, so it’s not as ‘convenient’ as people make it out to be.

Anyways, with that said, a non drinker can fit in. You have to realize that drinking is a college-specific problem, not a Bowdoin-specific problem. No matter what college you go to, for the most part, you’re going to have to ask this question. I, however, do feel that a non drinker can fit in. No one here is like “you don’t drink? You’re a freakin’ loser man!!!” If you drink, good for you, you’ll easily find things to do on the weekend. If you don’t drink, good for you, you just have to try a bit harder to find things to do on the weekend.

Hmm, in my impression, Bowdoin students should have pretty much to do on weekends… Don’t you guys have papers to write and extracurricular activities to attend? It’s hard to imagine students drinking just to pass time.
(I haven’t been to Bowdoin, so correct me if I’m wrong)

alcohol scene at bowdoin is no different from that of any other top liberal arts college.

and stratus… bowdoin’s not really in the middle of nowhere. brunswick is the largest coastal town in maine… close to ocean, tons of bars and restaurants.

freeport has one of the largest outlets in new england (brooks brothers, j crew, ralph lauren, ben & jerrys, etc)… 15 minutes away.

you should visit williamstown, MA. or Middlebury, Vermont. two most depressing towns you’ll ever see

THOSE places are in the middle of nowhere… with no big city anywhere close by, and nothing to do period

I’m a freshman at Bowdoin, and there is a fairly prominent drinking scene here, though my impression is that it isn’t much different from other LACs. There’s also a pretty significant non-drinking culture here. I live in a chem-free dorm, and I really love the quieter environment and community of people here. I don’t feel rejected by the students on campus who drink, and I have plenty of friends who drink (though I don’t usually hang out with them when they’re drinking).

Is this because the other dorms are too loud?

During the week also?

I would imagine that Sunday-Thursday its pretty quiet in all dorms as the students are busy studying.

I don’t often hang out in the other dorms, so I’m not at all an expert on the environments there, but I get the impression that they can be somewhat rowdy on the weekends. I know that as a quieter person, I really appreciate the chem-free atmosphere, though I don’t have that much evidence to compare it to non-chem-free dorms. I’m sure that they’re very livable and friendly, but if you’re sure that you’re a non-drinker, I’d recommend going chem-free. You’re right, though- people here take their studies very seriously, and Sunday through Thursday evenings are more low-key wherever you are.
