Hey, I will be attending Iowa State this fall, I was asked to do the ALEKS Math test. I'm afraid of getting a low score and falling behind in class.
- What are some tips you give me?
- If I get a low score and get into a low level class, will that affect my graduation time?

Depends on your major. If you intend to major in something that requires starting calculus in your first semester (e.g. math, physics, engineering), then starting in a math course below calculus can result in delayed graduation.

Some schools have their own math placement tests; you can try them to see what you may need to review out of high school math topics. However, the ALEKS test may be harder or easier.

So is there anything I can do to graduate on time if i dont get in calculus right away??

It depends on the major(s) you are considering and how “compressible” their curricula are if you are delayed in starting calculus (sometimes, summer courses can help). Better would be to avoid the problem and review the topics that those placement tests linked above indicate are your weaker areas.

If you do get a low score, you can take this review module (I think you have to pay for it though) and then retake the test and possibly take your score. The downside is that if you do worse on the second attempt, they take the score of your second attempt.

Why don’t you sign up with Aleks.com and take their review modules before the test to study? You can do a week as a free trial version or a month is only $19.95.

Thanks for the answers! I want to sign in the ALEKS website but it ask me which topic do I want to review (Prep Calculus, Highschool Algebra, Prep Algebra) I dont know which one to choose!

If you’ve taken Calculus in high school then you should take the Prep Calculus review module.

Double post, sorry!

The problem is that I graduated in Venezuela! My math courses were standard by the school, I don’t think i have seen calculus, but algebra, and trigonometry is no problem!

What are you planning on majoring in? Maybe they’ll accommodate for international students.

Im planning in majoring in Mechanical Engineering

In order to place in Calculus I, you would have to receive at least a 75% on the placement exam. Here are some algebra and trigonometry practice exams:
