2.6+ 0/1
No avg 1/2

The school is Hotchkiss, but i thought big state U's like U mich dont care wut school u r from

First off: Many students miscalculate their Michigan GPA. You can't be sure your figures are correct.

Second: You better believe U-M considers context. It knows good schools and it considers an applicant's transcript in light of the school's curriculum and reputation. Back when U-M used a formula and points system, students could get extra points just for the school they attended, and additional points for the curriculum they elected to take. U-M no longer uses a formula, but its application readers are trained to take this into account. They're going to know a school like Hotchkiss. If it's a less well-known school, they'll have access to a profile provided by the school and possibly another one provided by the College Board.

What is the official method of calculating UMich GPA? My school uses an 11 pt system and I have a 10.6. I figure this to be about 3.85...?

Bearcats, Michigan DEFINITELY analyzes students. Many posters in this forum seem to think that just because Michigan doesn't look at weighed GPAs and recenters GPAs according to its own standards that it does not take other factors into consideration. Nothing could be further from the truth. GPA is only one of the things the adcom looks at. It also looks at course difficulty (60% of Freshman have earned AP or IB credits) and it definitely recognizes the elite high schools. In fact, look at how many students enrolled into Michigan from the following East Coast private high schools over the last 4-5 years:
Dalton School - 12
St Paul's School - 6
Spence School - 3
Deerfield Academy - 3
Chapin School - 2
Phillips Academies (Exeter and Andover) - 13
Hotchkiss School - 5
Groton School - 0
Choate Rosemary Hall - 0
Hill School - 3
Loomis Chaffee - 4
Taft School - 3
St Albans School - 2
Collegiate School - 2
Lawrenceville School - 6

I realize that isn't a huge number, but considering the fact that those are highly exclusive private East Coast high schools, the fact that Michigan manages to attract close to 20 students from those schools on an annual basis is pretty impressive.

the unweighted average statistics are given by the school..i doubt they would be wrong....those numbers included music and art classes though, which at hotchkiss we know them as GPA saver, so it is highly likely that the GPA is even lower

and i was just wondering becoz last time i posted my stats and said i hav a 3.2 GPA 1450 SATs people jumping on me saying that i have no chance wutsoever they throw out your application if it's lower than 3.5

Bearcats, you didn't tell us you attended one of the nation's top 10 private high schools. I still think Michigan is a slight reach, but you definitely have a realistic chance.

last year, 2 kids at my school
1 kid picked michigan engineering over cornell engineering (self explanatory)

the other kid picked michigan LAC over dartmouth because he feels that michigan is more diverse
