Algebra 2 or Accelerated Pre-Calculus in 11th Grade?

I’m currently in college prep Geometry, and I’m trying to decide whether to take college prep Algebra 2 or Accelerated Pre-Calculus for next year. I received a 96 in the course I’m in right now for the first semester, and I currently have a 97 average five weeks into the second semester. I want my profession to be something aligned with mathematics, but there is an obstacle to taking the advanced course. The accelerated course for both 9th and 10th grade mathematics incorporate 1.5 years of the college prep material. This means that in order to take this advanced course, I would have to take all of Algebra 2 during summer school. Should I stay in the regular course, or go to summer school to take the harder class?

If you think you want to major in math, take the summer courses. Know that there is wayyyyy more to math than what you have learned so far, so I would wait until you take Calculus to decide you want to spend your life doing math xD

In terms of more advanced algebra, I’ve already done factoring quadratics, dividing polynomials by long division, operations on more advanced functions, and also imaginary numbers. In my spare time, I’ve also memorized the unit circle.

First, ask your math teacher.
Then, think it thoroughly: are you ready to devote the necessary time to do well in Algebra2 summer?

Agree with the above poster. Remember that you will be learning 9 months of material in just 3. The pace will be fast and if you don’t totally understand a concept, you don’t really have time to stop and work on it. It is certainly doable, but also certainly time consuming.

agreed^ i think it would definitely be beneficial to you to be able to take precalc your junior year instead of alg 2 but it seems like a very challenging course to complete over the summer- not nearly impossible though. If you’re motivated, I would say go for it!

I agree, if you’re motivated and determined, it’s definitely possible! in my grade, a lot (like 25%!) of students advanced a math level. i personally self studied geometry, alg 2 to take precalc my freshman year. i personally found alg 2 easy with a solid alg 1 background; the hardest part I’d say is the trig stuff and maybe the polynomial division and graphs. I’d say take a look at a textbook and use Khan Academy. I did Khan Academy for about 5 months and did very well in precalc because my alg 2 foundation was good!

Precalc freshman year is HIGHLY unusual, as it is the “normal” (on-time) class for seniors who want to attend a selective 4-year college…
