all honest stats- chance me for ed?

Hi Everyone,

So I’ve officially applied ED to Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences.
Penn is (really) my dream school, so PLEASE be honest. Do you think I have a chance ?

Everything I’ve written is true. My grades are really what could kill me.

MY STATS :
SAT with superscore : 2310
Breakdown : Math 720, CR 790, Writing 800

SAT composite on a single test date : 2260
Breakdown : Math 670, CR 790, Writing 800

SAT II Lit : 760
SAT II Italian : 790
SAT II US History : 770
SAT II Math 2 : 710
(I’m taking Latin SAT II in December)

AP English and Composition : 5
AP European History : 5
AP US History : 5
AP Italian : 5

MY GRADES :
This is where it gets tricky. My school doesn’t report a GPA or Class Rank, so I can’t be sure.

But, my sophomore year I had mostly B’s. Then, my Junior year I stepped it up and only had one B+ in Physics. My first semester senior grades are A’s except for a B+ in English (which I think I’ll be able to bring up).

My average is at least a 3.5 because that was necessary to be inducted into, but that’s my only indication of GPA.

AWARDS:
- Three Gold Medals in the National Latin Exam
- One Gold Medal in the National Medusa Mythology Exam
- One Silver Medan in the National French Contest
- Three National Model United Nations Awards
*at the school level: I’ve won Latin awards consistently, have a full merit scholarship, and am MVP of the Lacrosse Team

HOOK :
- I’m bilingual : I speak Italian fluently.
- I’m a first generation American and college student
- I plan on studying Classics in college : something few people do
- TWO well established Penn professors have contacted Admissions telling them that I’d be a good fit (they are both Classics profs whom I do not know personally ; I met with them and they liked me)

EXTRA CURRICULARS :
- Model United Nations : president
- Varsity Lacrosse : captain
- Campus Ministry/ Community Service
- National Honor Society
- National Classics Society of New York
- Peer Assistant Leader (quite selective club actually : I mentor younger students)

SENIOR YEAR CLASSES :
AP STATISTICS
AP LITERATURE
AP FRENCH
AP ART HISTORY
Latin IV

As for work experience, I had a great internship with a world famous NPO (I'm not saying the name for internet safety purposes) where I used my Italian and French skills to translate documents.

I have also earned 8 college credits at Harvard University for classes I took in :
Adolescent Literature (Grade- A)
Creative Writing (Grade- B)

I have also taken courses (no credit) at Brown and Amherst

Please let me know HONESTLY what you think. No need to be mean : I just want honesty.

I really love Penn, but I know my grades may not meet the standard.

nb. I go to a very small school (grad class of 50) and 5 others are applying to Penn ED

oh…forgot to mention.

Live in CT and go to a private school and I’m a also a caucasian male…

if you dont get in there’s something seriously wrong with the admissions process, good luck

Well, I’m in no position to tell you your chances. But wow, your GPA situation is exactly like mine! Screwed up sophomore year, and basically attempted to redeem myself in junior year. And SATs are basically the same too.

Well good luck to you, and I hope you get in. :]

Your GPA is probably your biggest hindrance, but your SAT is pretty good. I remember the guy who did my info session at Penn told me that the transcript is the heart of the application, but that was a couple of years ago. Since you’re going for CAS, you have a chance. Nothing really stands out though. I guess its good you speak Italian, but almost everyone here is bilingual. Your ECs don’t really have a focus. Hopefully your essays are stellar. Good luck…you’ll need it

Where from CT?

I’m from Brookfield, near Danbury.

My SAT’s are alittle lower. I have an upward trend though for GPA. Two presidencies and 2 Varsity Captains spots. Also, I’m hispanic. I was told i have a good chance. So i’m going to assume you do too.

Well your test scores are definitely high, and that’s good. Your multiple national awards probably will look good too, because Ivies like National recognition. The only thing I can see holding you back is your GPA, but maybe the admission officers will look past that. Hope everything works & you make it in! :)

Honestly your gpa is really low for penn, they are looking for pretty much all A’s in the toughest classes. Considering gpa and high school record is most important in the admissions decision, your in a tough situation. But good luck.

If you read correctly, i dont have an official gpa. All i know is a minimum of 3.5 UW because that was necessary for NHS induction. Regardless, yhank you for your post
