all my fellow desi children.

hey! i know this thread will be like SUPER fobby, but too bad.
so my school's SASA (south asian student association) is trying to raise money for this one guy who has a nonprofit organization and is affiliated with our school. his organization helps build schools in afghanistan and pakistan .. and well we want to hold a MAJOR fundraiser, but the only thing is our school won't let us hold one of those "desi shows" like other schools.

if you guys have any fundraising ideas, please suggest some (=, we already sell samosas and do mehendi occasionally, and that too ONLY at our school.

haha "that too only" is a very fobby construction

if you want to hold a major fundraiser...why don't you put on a cultural show, themed dance (our school's service club always put on a charity ball every december), or sell holiday grams? holiday grams are always popular and it would be cute if you sponsored them for your school this year.

AHAHHA thats exactly what our school won't let us do. something about chaperones and people showing up with weed.

holiday grams - culinary club is doing

oh yeah, and the bhangra teams got into a huge fight last year at this one other high school. it was interesting. the police showed up.

I like samosas.

why not build schools in india as well?

cause the organization also tries and communicates with radical islamists and tries to prove to them that not all non-muslims are bad, and thus try to change their radical views.

and plus, people at my school [like me] are building schools in india and other countries for our senior service projects (which we're required to do in order to graduate)

plus, india's becoming all hi-tech and junk, excluding the villages, i wouldn't consider it third world.

lol sirajoman, pulling a John Brown there, or were you born that way (retarded)

Our school Muslim Club is having a Henna for Humanity fundraiser where they give people Henna designs for $1 and enter them in a raffle for a free pie.

Mmmm.......pie.

casino night- charge an entrance fee and have different games at different levels. you will win in the end

lock-in's work too, but those are really hard to plan

"India sucks stop trying to be proud of your third world heritage you fob!"

thanks.

Agree with sirajoman. I'm Indian, but when I see those Indians at my school who're desperate to show they're proud of their culture(even though they couldn't tell me the name of the current Indian prime minister)wearing their hideous traditional clothes or blasting bhangra on the quad, I wish I could bleach my skin or something. Indian culture is soooooo retarded. I just tell people I'm Sri Lankan when people ask "Do you like that?"

the henna idea sounds bad because it takes a long time to dry, and you have to aviod water for a while. Samosas sound okay though

aviod cultural things in general, they tend to alienate people. try more traditional means of fundraising (raffles, dances, etc). They are tried and true.

I am happy to be Indian in heritage, but know I'm American at heart. :-)

hah gnrfan, you may find it embarrassing, but that's what's stupid. have you realized that alot of modern fashion is based off of indian styles? like those flats, and skirts, and other things. and where i live, people actually ACCEPT and even like our culture.

hideous traditional clothes? tell that to the 10 non indian people that asked me to bring them back clothes when i go to india this summer.

and the girl who's giving me $500 to buy her more than one. people LOVE our clothes.

and again; people love our jewelry. and if you misinterpret us people who actually are proud of where we're from and who we are for "desperate" fobs, you think wrong. we're just not embarrassed like you wannabes. cause how come you guys are okay with it when any other culture's displaying theirs? and i just like wearing bangles and stuff with my outfits cause they actually match and look good. geez.

and please stop using the word "retarded" in that context. it's really sad for those suffering mental retardation because half the time it isn't their fault (unless they were stupid) so it's just kind of pathetic.

ohh and sevitagen, we actually do the mehendi during lunch, and usually people have their free periods/get them on the hands they don't write with .. or on their ankles (private school, uniform -- skirts) .. it's quite popular actually .. we only did it one lunch last year and some people couldn't get it so we had to get permission to do it all the other lunches.

heyy...our school's desi club does mehendi tattoos a lot and those seem to work well

i dont know if samosas sell at your school but they were definitely a bust at ours....dont even bother with indian sweets

what made us the most money were these little bangles/rings/other items from india...you might try that?

oh and i totallyy agree with you on the fobby stuff, i used to be "whitewashed" until the 9th grade but i like having a mix of both cultures in my life

Wow, many of the posters here are quite...immoderate of speech. We need to clarify the distinction between the normal Indian people who do not dislike being Indian but are not particularly obsessive about it and those that prowl around in Indian gangs talking about Hindi movies and failing language arts classes. That was also quite intemperate, but...whatever.

I'm not a part of the Indian American Student Association here (mostly because it's practically a cult), but you could put on a show without school sponsorship at an off-campus location.

To add on to deeptin09, I am not Indian, but I find Indian clothes strikingly beautiful, have enjoyed bhangra whenever I've heard it am thoroughly obsessed with Indian food. I also enjoy learning about its history and things like that. I am no India expert, but I think it is pointless to bash your own culture, especially when so many enjoy it.
