All-nighters

ugh.. i have to pull all-nighters all too often.. i just pop some nodoz.. they work miracles

woohoo...I think i am finishing my last (and probably 5th or 6th) all-nighter of this school year..

lol, i love this thread!

hmm...before this year (junior year), i never had to pull all-nighters, but it's becoming a habit.

major lab reports (6hrs each) x 3/week = no fun!

so what do i do? i usually work on it from 9-1...then i wake up early at 5ish (refreshed) and finish it. i get a ride to school, which saves 1/2 hr.

what else? umm...i really try not to procrastinate, but it's hard. i'm in 6 extracurriculars, and hw is sooooooo boring!

also, i try to finish hw in the classes before that class (not an option for required typed hw of course), and i do the typed hw the night before. like previously mentioned, i do hw at lunch (which is great if i'm not sure of the answer)

i usually take some light caffeine in the morning, which i found really doesn't help. sugar doesn't help either. for me to get energized, i need to feel happy. so then i might do some aerobics (5 mins) to some good music and that's how i stay awake.

with 6 hrs of hw daily, finishing it all before i go to sleep is not an option...ah, how i wish i was still in kindergarten!

oh yeah...UT Austin published an article on the anatomy of an all-nighter with suggestions as to food choices that will help and such. i don't have the website any more, but if you search for "anatomy of an all-nighter" i think you'll find it.

LOL I already posted the link.

I've never pulled an all-nighter. Probably 5 times or so I've had major projects that I was up til 2 or so working on, then I had to go to Kinkos to get them bound (Books and such). I would get home around 3 and then sleep. Sometimes I just can't sleep and get 2-3 hours, but on the average I'm in bed by 11:30 or 12. I have zero period, so I leave the house by 6:30 am.

Personally, if I had all that work and I got home from school at 3, it wouldn't seem like that big of a deal-- Probably because I am the kind of person who puts effort into things that are close to my heart- if I am inspired by the teacher and the assignment. If its anything like a paper we would write at my school, we would have mandatory research check-ins leading up to the due date. Assuming the research was done, I would come home, unplug my laptop, and get working somewhere not connected to the internet. I would hammer out a first draft, read it over, have my dad/best friend/EIC of school paper (requires getting back online) edit it, enter in all corrections, check for format and citations if teachers are strict about that, and hope that it can be done by 7 or so. I would eat, maybe go to yoga class or stretch in my living room. (It seems I am recalling the NIGHT before my term paper was due..when I also had a APUSH and APchem test the next day)

Then I would go over the lecture notes from chem, check the Princeton Review book to see what they ascertained as essential from the section of study. Review those formulas and talk out the concepts to myself (A technique that works very well for me as I learn best auditorially) After about an hour or so I would call it quits on chem. I have always found that I simply can't stay awake all night--
I firmly believe everyone would do better even if they forego studying in favor of sleep- at least then the odds of recalling the lecture or the reading would be better.

Then I would write up the oral, review it to a parent, and hope that Spanish was later in the day and there would be time to go over it in another class.

My best friend and I are complete opposites. I've probably gotten 2x the amount of sleep she has this year, and we've got pretty much the same grades in everything (Percentile-wise, they are all As regardless)

I don't know how she does. I would say I admire her dedication, but I just don't understand what drives anyone to keep working. I sure couldn't. Does that make me lazy?

can someone update me on the exact definition of an all-nighter. Is it when you go through the whole night without sleeping a wink? Going straight from studying to going to school the next day. Cuz too many people say "Yea man i pulled an all nighter yesterday, I was up till 5" but I'm presuming that doesn't really count since they slept from 5 - 7.

If I stay awake past the time that I feel fatigued, I forget that I'm tired. I am, of course, but I work slowly and do not fall alseep. I don't like to pull all-nighters. It's awful. I've only done two in my academic history.

here's my plan:
1. do homework in class (When the math teacher is talking, do tonight's homework, I've found that reading a few paragraphs in the book is more time efficient and just as effective as listening to the teacher). This is key, cause if your without homework in every class, that just leaves tests and projects.
2. Leave a 1 or 2 subjects of homework before school. Get to school early (30 minutes is fine) and start up a group of friends in your classes and trade and copy homework. its sweet :)
3. Don't pull all nighters. Its better to go to bed at around 10 and get up at 1 or 2 and then do your ****. This time trade off is better since a. you're more awake after a nap, and b. there are no distractions (not many people are awake at 2). ive found that taking a shower is also wise when you wake up.

honestly... you guys are a bunch of competitious ppl! i'm really impressed! i'd never stay up for an all-nighter. i'd just flunk the test or not do the hwk and tel my teacher, i'm sorry, i couldn't be botehred to do my hwk... ;)

augh self-proclaimed procrastinator right here, so of course my sleeping schedule is messed up.

jeez ever since second semester started, my sleeping patterns have been totally screwed over. procrastinating until sunday night, i'll go to sleep around 3 am then get myself up at 5:45 am [yes, just to make zero period]. then afterschool, i'll come home around 5 pm and unwillingly knock out until 8 pm or so. then i'll wake up and do all my work until 3-4 am, then get myself back up at 5:45 am. aughh so technically i'm only sleeping 3 hour shifts for the entire week.

staying up is seriously a big pain, but i can't help it. :( i end up eating alotta chocolate and drinking alotta coffee and splashing my face with cold water and lightly slapping myself all night. go figure.
