^^agreed. i admit that i've made some chances threads over the course of my cc time, but I can't stand melodrama-just make a generic title like "chances", get whatever few responses you get, and then let the thread die.

lol, thanks LauraN and everyone else that responded to this thread

I've basically stopped coming to CC because i was a lot happier about colleges before coming here, but i come back time to time if theres anything new and important

By the way, I've never even heard of USAMO until i got here =P, haha

Good luck to everyone applying to MIT

hmm i've often wondered if cc has been good or bad for me lol.... i guess i had unrealistic expectations before? maybe i'm more cynical now :P

Oh, CC has really made me go, "Uh... no wonder not many people from my area make it into top-level schools; we're all clueless about the competition."

I never knew that the competition at some of the schools that students on CC go to were so tough. At my school, I have the second highest SAT score at 1430 (M/R) and I'm in the top 1%. I've never even heard of these competitions like USAMO and AIME until I came to CC. But I'm not letting CC discourage me at all.

Out of curiosity, what was the highest?

Same - I had never heard of USAMO or AIME. People down here just generally don't participate in it unless if you're in one of those prestigious science prep schools that always come to State Science/Engineering Fair and make everyone go, "***?! How did they do this in a high sch-- oh wait it's a tech prep school."

This thread makes me feel so much better haha. Thanks..

Hmm, if you guys have never heard of the USAMO, are there no math competitions in your school?

there were no math competitions at my school until I started them last year. :) except there was a calculus team, which does CML-type things.

but yeah, never heard of AMC, USAMO, math leagues until I started meeting/talking to people from other cities.

Only UIL Math, which is one-a-year, but since my school was new we couldn't participate until last year, and I was sick on competition week D:

Hopefully now that I got Mu Alpha Theta started up we can participate in a lot more.

My school doesn't have any state or national academic competitions like USAMO

Although i think a science team is forming this year sometime after we get our college admit/reject letters (I'm obviously going to join for fun, haha)

Yeah! public school FTW

collegealum314's post #17 is well worth reading and then re-reading. I commend it to the attention of any admissions representatives on this forum.
