Why do you post "chance me" threads?

I am guilty. I did post a chance me thread when I first came on to College Confidential, but I have realized that there is no point to these "chance me" threads.

MITChris posted this a several months ago
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/939227-reminder-no-one-not-even-me-can-give-you-accurate-chance-mit.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/939227-reminder-no-one-not-even-me-can-give-you-accurate-chance-mit.html</a></p>

This is true for other schools as well. If an admissions officer cannot even predict results, how can a bunch of stressed out, unqualified high school students predict results?

If you have posted a chance me thread in the past, how many times have you heard "All the Ivies are a crap shoot" or "All the Ivies are reaches"? Come on people! You know what people are going to say when you post your stats.

Even when you get a "real" response, there is probably a major bias. If you have kids with weaker stats, they are going to say that you are in because it makes them feel better about their own chances. When you have kids with stronger stats, they are going to put you down to feel better about themselves. (This is a generalization.)

This was posted in the results thread for UChicago (<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-chicago/1041336-official-university-chicago-class-2015-ea-results-thread-8.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-chicago/1041336-official-university-chicago-class-2015-ea-results-thread-8.html</a> - post #115) Imagine if he did not apply to Chicago because he was so upset by his chance me thread.

There are far too many subjective factors in college admissions to make an accurate prediction.

Do yourself a favor and think before you post a chance me thread. Will you really get an answer that is going to help you?

Thank you.

I agree with you.

The only chances you can really give are based on your knowledge of the school’s admissions and their typical student stats. I respond to some chances threads, but I generally limit my answers to “low chance”, “good chance”, and “almost certain” depending on whether they’re below the 25th percentile, between 25-75, or above the 75th, respectively. Sure, you might still get in if you’re below the 25th, but that generally means you’re outstanding in some other area that your posted stats might not reflect.

Its comforting.

i guess its comforting in a way to get as many opinions as you can…despite the part of you that rationalizes that another 18 year old in the same position as you is unlikely to be able to provide you the same conclusion as an adcom, its human nature to try and feel better by asking others.

i also feel like posting a chance me thread, but then i know that the only reason im doing it is because i want to try and get some moral boosters out of the thread b4 the decisions come out…

what bugs me is people who post chance me - ill chance you back threads, i mean, if you can chance some1 else…what stops you chancing yourself? :/
