All this talk of rejection freaks me out ... I need help

Hey yo

I'm from Tasmania which is in Australia. ( u know, the little island at the bottom of oz)

I'm probably going to apply an ED to Cornell but after reading these forums I've become somewhat jittery. I've finished school already and i've spend the past few months at a local uni here. We finish in November so I've been chillin for a while now. I would really appreciate your honest opinions people.

SAT 1- 1550 (Maths 750, Verbal 800). I did it in y11 and not doing it agn

SAT II - 800 Maths, 800 Lit, 790 Pysics.

My School? Well its a local quaker run school. Not too good, not too shabby. Gave me hard time trying to extract a class rank out of them.

Secondary Record? Yeah its pretty much decent. Not sure how GPA works exactly but I pretty much get A's all round. They are all highly weighted subjects in my place cauz no one else here cares about anything.

Extra Curricular?

RUGBY- the best game ever ladies and gentlemen. State Club U18's champions, state rep and on all star list at National championships.

Piano- State recital, era works U18 winner for several years as well as LMUS diploma (highest possible diploma availble here)

Youngest ever open state chess champion (2004)

State U21 Table Tennis champion (6 years running), U18 Champion. National U16 placed 5th in championship few years ago.

Pretty much I had the chance to represent my state and school in may national championships for everything but due to a lack of finances ... I only attended rugby cauz the club paid for the expenses.

Awards.

Top Economics student in state
Top Info Sys student in state
Top Maths Specialised in state
these are all from my end of year results

Prize in Aus Maths Comp (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004)
Plaque in the Chemistry Quiz (2003, 2004)
Random loads of other awards.

Community Service?

Amnesty International Student Coordinator for state of Tasmania
Worked at least 6 hours every saturday at Old People homes since Y7
Worked every winter holidays for the Salvation Army

Work Experience?

Well I work pretty much all my spare time weekends at the local supermarket either at the casheir or stacking boxes since y7. Doesn't pay much but enough for me to spend.

Languages? Profficient in English (duh), and Mandarin

So ppl,

what are my chances for really selective schools like the ives and stanford, UCB, Northwestern etc. As i said earlier its scary how people with good scores and stuff are too afraid to apply to the ives and stuff.

btw- my major is Economics

THANKS
Alex

listen, ppl with good scores and everything shouldn't be afraid to apply anywhere
you look great to me, and the fact that you're an international student with all this will surely impress the admission ppl
I think as far as the ivys go, anyone who meets the quali. should apply, but as always HYP is a crapshoot for anyone

Hey, definitely solid shot at Cornell, but apply ED, you are international which is even more difficult than it already is

You look look a good candidate, but since you didn't take a writing SATII, I think most ivies will want the new SAT.

Yes, you should probably take the New SAT.

:)

mmmm. Thanks people.

the biggest problem for me to take the new SAT is that I have to fly to melbourne to take the test cauz our state is too insignificant for anyone to pay attention to us.

But i'll talk to my parents. Thanks again people

How big is your "state"?

R U asian? If not, then that fluent in mandarin thing will help your admissions

Well I'm not asian so I hope a profieciency in mandarin will help. And my state is very small. Very large in landmass considering we only have a hundred thousand or so people (i think). You can find tassie by looking at a map of australia. We're that apple shaped island at the bottom right hand corner of oz.

I don't think anyone else here even wants to go to uni outside our state !!!

Would it be easier to get into Cornell, Northwestern, Chicago or Brown for me?
