I was just wondering if Allegheny had an overall good impression among the public. If the school was well respected and politically stable. Thank you for the information!

I think Alleheny’s reputation among the general public is very limited geographically. This is not a slam, the same can be said for virtually any college that does not play BCS-level football. It’s reputation is very solid among college counselors and those who work in higher ed.

Could you explain what you mean by “politically stable?”

When I say “politically stable,” I mean a school that isn’t 90% conservative, 90% liberal, but more balanced among the two, where students wouldn’t feel ostracized for being of one political preference rather than the other.

liberals ostracize, conservatives may not agree with you but will still be nice to you. so , unless you are conservative I would not worry about on campus politics.

I think as LACs go, Allegheny is pretty middle of the road politically. As far as reputation, it is not highly known outside of the region, but is well regarded by graduate schools throughout the country.

So are you saying that a conservative student would feel uncomfortable at Allegheny?

Another question – how active are the faith-based student groups?

My daughter was active in the “campus dems” as she referred to the group. She also spoke of the campus republicans, so I know they are there. She mentioned that on election night, as Obama was winning, that the roommate of a friend was quite rude to them and stormed out of the room. I did not find this significant in any way as people are people and this happens among political rivals. I only mention it due to the comment “liberals ostracize, conservatives may not agree with you but will still be nice to you”. My daughter is very invested in her views but has mentioned several conversations with classmates/friends with opposing views so I get the feeling it is a pretty fair mix.
