Allowed to have two deposits down for college?

After taking many things into consideration (ahem money), I put down my deposit for SUNY New Paltz on May 1st. However, I’m having second thoughts about this choice and now want to attend School of Visual Arts (SVA). I got in early with a decent scholarship but it obviously wasn’t as cheap as a SUNY. I feel I won’t be challenged at New Paltz and SVA will give me so many opportunities. I emailed the head of the Illustration department at SVA and asked if there’s still room and she said it’s full, but I can still make a deposit, be notified that I’m waitlisted, and see if a space opens up. But am I allowed to do this if I already made a deposit at New Paltz?

I know I’m very late in deciding on a college, and hell I’ll probably change my mind halfway through the year again because that’s just me, but money has been an issue for me (single mom, already paying for 2 siblings in college) and I felt guilty for her to pay for me to go to SVA even though it was my top choice. I truly believe I’m a great artist who will excel and succeed at a top college for illustration, albeit it may not be the most cost-effective choice.

I’ve never heard of a deposit being required to get on a waitlist. It just sounds odd. if you don’t get in will you get the deposit back? And will you get the same aid package if accepted?

Why do you feel like you won’t be challenged at New Paltz? Your 3 part SAT is in line with their mid-50% range. You aren’t supposed to double deposit. Since finances are an issue, I’d just go to NP and not bother with the other school.

What they are asking for can’t be a deposit for a place at the school since you have not been accepted (again). Try to clarify with SVA what exactly the money they are requesting is since it is not a traditional school deposit given the circumstances. You can’t give up a spot at SUNY New Paltz until you are certain you have a spot at SVA and that the school will be affordable.
