I'm a student at UNC-CH. During my freshman year (08/09) I became deathly sick with infective endocarditis. I spent MONTHS in and out of hospitals, trying to get diagnosed, and 5 months later I was diagnosed, and treatment took another 4-5 months. Needless to say, 2009-2010 was not a good year. I took courses through my local community college while I was at the hospital, because I was so scared I was going to fall behind the rest of my classmates.

My problem is this: I missed 2 of my final exams for classes my last semester at UNC, and missed about a month of classes. I ended up receiving 2 Cs and 2 Fs for that semester. :/

Being my freshman year and not having anything to fall back on, that brought my GPA down to a 1.6.

I'm currently enrolled in 2 courses for Summer Session II, and the outlook isn't so great. Despite my efforts to keep up, the community college courses just weren't as rigorous as UNC courses are, and I've found myself incredibly far behind the rest of my classmates, and with a low GPA. My outlook for these two courses seems to be 2 Cs, I'm hoping I can work my butt off to get Bs, but even with 2 Bs that doesn't bring my GPA above a 2.0.

I'm pretty depressed about the whole thing. I've been told that there's no such thing as academic forgiveness at chapel hill, so those Fs are there to stay.

Is my academic future completely ruined just because I got sick? What are some options I can take to get out of this mess?

I've considered transferring to another school, that would reset my GPA, but I worked so hard to get into UNC. I'm just not prepared to give that up.

You could try writing a letter to the dean explaining your circumstances. I’m pretty sure he would be understanding… I mean if I were you I would’ve been focusing on getting over that sickness as well.

MD Mom is correct, If you would’ve brought document or have any they might be more willing to change the F’s to I’s which is incomplete. Then you would have to contact your professors to get work from them.

You didn’t have the option for medical leave? At my school it completely wipes that semester off your record (no I’s that you have to complete by a certain date).

Medical leave was, and may be retroactively still be, an option. You’ve got to get in touch with your student affairs department and/or your dean of students.
