Hi,
So recently I was informed that I would be put on a waitlist for AP Physics next year (which is my senior year of hs). I really want to go into some type of technology major in college (cs,engineering, etc). What would be the best alternate science classes to take?
Thanks
What science classes have you taken so far? What are your options?
I have taken honors physics as well as chemistry and bio. My other science options are AP Chem,AP Bio and APES
There are also other lower level classes like honors marine bio, criminology, etc
Take AP Chem…you will have to take Chem in college as an engineering major.
AP chemistry may let you get out of taking a chemistry course that may be required for engineering majors.
Yet another vote for AP Chem. Though some engineering programs require a science elective and a passing AP Bio score might fulfill that as it did for my DD.
@treschicos Do you know in what kind of circumstance Bio would work as well? I would prefer to take bio over chem because of my prior knowledge/comfortability with the subject. However, if it has no positive effect I would be hard pressed to not take chem.
You may want to check the degree requirements of your desired engineering majors at colleges you are considering (e.g. the in-state public universities for your state of residency).
A. If they tend to require chemistry and allow AP chemistry credit to cover that requirement, then AP chemistry will be more useful.
B. If they tend allow either biology or chemistry for a science elective and allow AP credit in each case, then you can choose either one. If AP credit is allowed for only one, then the one where AP credit is allowed will be more useful.
C. If your intended major is biomedical or biological/agricultural engineering, both biology and chemistry are likely to be required, so you need to check whether AP credit is allowed in either case.
Note that, if case C does not apply (i.e. you are not intending biomedical or biological/agricultural engineering), case A is probably more common than case B.
Of course, there could also be:
D. AP credit is not allowed to fulfill chemistry, biology, or science elective requirements.
IMO, for an engineer, AP chem will be better preparation.
AP Chem makes more sense for a CS/Engineering major than AP Bio.
