I plan on applying to a few combined BA/MD programs and have volunteered roughly 60 hours in an Indian hospital/free clinic. I've come back to the US from the trip and would like to start volunteering in a hospital, but the wait time to get into the volunteer program is ~2 months. I was wondering if there are any alternatives to the commonly done hospital volunteering. One thought that came to my mind is volunteering at the blood center. Is the blood center a good alternative to hospital or do any of you have any better alternatives? Would it be looked down upon that I have limited hospital volunteering even if I have many hours in the blood center?

I’m a prospective student as well, so I don’t have a lot of authority. From what I understand, though, schools like to see extracurriculars that are related to the medical field. I’d say the blood center is just fine.

Yeah, I’ll have had a good amount of hours in a hospital, and I plan on setting up some doctor shadowing, so I’ll have had “experience” in the hospital setting. The blood center is a fun place to volunteer too. Thanks for the reply and good luck!

Also you could do medical research internships which would help a lot as well. You basically get paid to do medical research at colleges or clinics. It is a good experience and good for college.
