Alumna Interviewer Notes

How long will it take them to contact us for an interview? I sent my app about five days ago.

Stonecold:

We don't see any of your personal statements or short answers - just quick comments about where you live, go to high school, and what activities you do.

As far as I know, anyone who personally knows you CANNOT interview you.

I always like it when students bring something to the interview - another way of me getting to know them.

ariesathena-What do you mean by "bring something"? Is that literally or figuratively? Thanks.

Oh, literally. Not "something" as in "Bring it on!" but a small portfolio of art work is nice to flip through, or a particularly poignant report (if it's a huge, huge passion - like saving children or something - one kid brought the print-outs of a project he did for saving wetlands), or maybe a picture of you doing something that relates to why that university - for example, you on a medical-related trip to a third world country.

If you take TheDad's advice, you should actually include such photos in your application - attach to relevant personal statement. You shooting the game-winning 3 pointer isn't what I'm talking about - but you with the dozens of little kids you tutor is great.

If you don't have anything, don't worry. But if you have it, bring it - as long as it isn't too big.

Alright thanks for the tips! I just had my Tufts interview! I think it went pretty well, it wasn't AMAZING or anything, but I think my interviewer liked me and was interested in what I had to say.

I have another question (sorry): My interviewer told me that she writes a 1 page write-up and gives me a rating from 1 to 5. I was just wondering, does this number have a large influence on the adcoms? I think my interview went well but I'm not sure how hard it is to get a 5. I was just wondering, I was kinda nervous when I found out about this number thing. ahhhh

Well, we have the number system, but it's hard to say what influence it has. My guess is very little - and it's actually used to standardize the interviewers. We don't have any solid criteria for giving out those numbers (it's not like we can only give 10% of our interviewees a "5"), but the automatic system actually averages our ratings. So if you get a "4," the admissions committee will actually see "4, average interviewer rating 4.1" or whatever.

Unless you are a total social deviant, the interview probably won't break you.

I have my Tufts interview tonight and this thread really helped. Thanks very much!

I had my interview several days ago. After the interview she said that I was a wonderful person and hopes that I get accepted, so I think it went fairly well. Usually I'm not one for words but it all started with her new puppy : ) When I entered her house the puppy ran up and started licking me; she said that it usually bites people. Good thing I love animals :D It was fantastic.

Ironically, I had already sent in a picture to Tufts of my dog and me.
