Alumni Interview Etiquette

I am meeting my alumni interviewer at a coffee shop.

1) Should I buy a drink?

2) Should I offer to buy my interviewer a drink?

3) How long should the interview last?

4) Who should end the interview?

Thanks!

Alumni interviewer here. I would suggest that if you arrive before the interviewer that you wait until the interviewer arrives before you buy anything. I always pay for my interviewee, and I would bet that’s very common. If s/he offers, graciously accept. If s/he doesn’t, you can go dutch. You absolutely do not have to treat the interviewer.

My interviews usually last 30-45 minutes depending on how chatty the applicant is. I would say you should take your cue from the interviewer as to when it’s over. It should be pretty obvious.

Thank you for the advice!

My interviewer was very friendly and I had an enjoyable experience.

Now, I would like to extend thanks. I only have my interviewer’s email address, so is it alright to send a thank you via email?

Also, about how long should I wait to follow up? 1 day? Less?

Thanks again.

Yes, an email thank-you note is fine and appreciated. I also do interviews and am surprised by how few students send one
I especially appreciated the student who sent one before I even arrived home!

Thank you!

I just sent a thank you email. :)
