alumni interview...

Hey guys, I've got my Georgetown alumni interview soon and was wondering what's appropriate to wear. It's supposed to be in her office right after school. I get the feeling it's pretty informal and plus I really don't want to wear a suit to school. Is a nice buttoned down shirt with DARK skinny jeans appropriate? Should I also wear a tie? thanks

I think the buttoned shirt sounds fine, although I don't know if I'd wear skinny jeans, depends how extreme they are.

Also, this is kind of odd, but I use "9891" in just about everything (Obviously I only used 98 for this screen name) so I was curious as to why you use it.

thanks! and the 9891 basically comes from the numbers of my birthday mixed up haha

I wore khakis, dress shirt, tie to my interview at a local bookstore coffee shop.

i wore a gtown tshirt, a blazer, and dark jeans to a coffee shop in SF

it was rather informal, so i think she didnt care

That's cool, I also use it for that reason (Sept. 8, 1991)

a suit is unnecessary. I'd wear a button down shirt and khakis, no matter how informal it is. don't wear jeans, you never know.

I'd go with the Patrick Ewing throwback jersey.

I'd go with the Patrick Ewing throwback jersey. Throw on some AI tats and you're good to go. Acceptance guaranteed.

It all depends on the person's expectation. All of the interviewers will be different in their expectation of what a Georgetown student should look like. No matter what your preconceived notions are about the informality of the interview, you should not wear jeans to be on the "safe" side. You should dress as nicely as you can, and as formally as you can. I, too, was going to wear jeans to an interview (for another university) but I asked my teacher if that would be appropriate, and she said to just dress formally. Simply put, you don't want to give them any reason to think less of you. I'm guessing most interviewees wear a sports coat and tie and all that jazz, as I did, and as I suggest that you do, too.

I have my interview this week and it’s at a starbucks. I was planning on just wearing a dress, tights, and heels. Is that too formal for a starbucks? What kind of questions do they ask? What should I prepare beforehand?

My D’s interview was Starbucks. She knew no jeans, but thought a dress was “too much”. I saw what she wore and it was PERFECT, in my opinion. I do NOT think a dress, tights, heels is too much - if that fits your comfort level. My D wore a skirt, v-neck sweater, and flats. I think the flats made the skirt less formal and “just right”. Just be well presented. Don’t wobble in on ultra high heels if you’re not comfortable in them. And don’t slouch in wearing dirty sneaks either. I think your outfit sounds fine. Just think of everyone at Starbucks. They’re in there on a business lunch or even conducting business. You’ll fit in just fine.

My D said her interview was very laid back (just like everyone else says). The interviewer just asked about her hobbies, desires. And she let my D ask questions, about Georgetown, whatever. It took about an hour but my daughter said it felt like much less. Her interviewer was quite young, only out of school a few years herself. She did not prepare at all, though I told her she should review the Georgetown sight and try to make sure she could verbalize WHY she wanted to apply to Georgetown. She did bring a resume, because others suggested it, but the interviewer didn’t ask for it (I don’t think).

Every interview is different. Every interviewee (is that a word?) is different. Everyone stresses but it’s ALL GOOD. So enjoy it and good luck.

My son wore jeans and a button down shirt to a Starbucks interviewer. Since his interviewer was in jeans and a polo shirt he felt he’d gotten it right. If he’d been going to an office, I’d say khakis would have been better. Without seeing the dress - it’s hard to know how dressed up you’ll look shy, but I’d say it’s probably fine. Starbucks tends to go from very casual to somewhat dressed up depending on where people are coming from.

My son enjoyed his interview. He got asked the questions you’d expect. Why Georgetown, what do you like about your school etc.

The dress is farely casual and I wore it to my USC interview a couple weeks ago so I think it will be fine. I just hope the interview goes similar to the USC one!

How much emphasis do you think admissions places on the interview? For instance, would just an average interview be a detriment to a person’s chances for admission or would it have relatively no impact?

General advice for guys… it’s hard to go wrong with a dress shirt and dress pants (no tie or jacket and can swap dress pants for khakis)…

Wear casual clothes- and always right a thank you note asap.

i’m doing my georgetown interview in 30 minutes and i was going to wear the same thing

Huh, old thread. Well, I had my interview on Thursday, and I had the privilege of knowing another Georgetown interviewer (other side of the country, though), so I asked her. She said that, for a guy, either a polo and khaki pants or a button down shirt and jeans would be good. She’s only had one student overdress, with a tie, and one under-dress, with jeans and a sweatshirt. However, she said that they’re instructed to not let the student’s appearance affect the report (to the degree of sanity, at least).
