can an interview ever reflect badly on you? like if the interviewer writes a bad rec or something?

i just had my interview today and i think i did okay. i wasn’t very eloquent and i might have come off a bit too flustered.

yes, a bad report will certainly hurt your chances, but coming across flustered is far less a problem (because it’s completely understandable), than coming across arrogant, narrowminded or over-bearing.

Is it too late to get an interview?

@good4college I believe that if you don’t get notified for one by November 20, then you won’t get one at all.

Ok, I’m praying for one

good4college, i hate to be a downer, but if you haven’t gotten an interview yet, you almost certainly won’t ever. my interviewer told me that we had to interview by the 20th, and as soon as you submitted your application your name was put into the database from which interviews are automatically assigned. there’s no reason why your interviewer would put off contacting you this long if you’d been assigned an interview; frankly, it would be quite rude of them to contact you this late and expect you to be available so quickly.

but really, it’s not that big a deal if you didn’t get an interview. it’s unlikely to make much of an impact anyway, and there certainly isn’t any inherent disadvantage to not having an interview. i had one, and it didn’t go so well. sucks for me, but it also shows how an interview isn’t necessarily a boost, as some people tend to assume.

ok, thanks for the advice :D

Axel, why was your interview bad?

a friend of mine got contacted for one literally an hour ago…there is still hope!

general question about interviews for schools like ivies, georgetown, stanford etc. can you choose who interviews you? if the interviews are optional can you have an alumni interview you and choose? thanks

was ur friend contacted by email?

Irishfan
I am not sure what u mean. My daughter was sent an email from Georgetown with the interviewers name and email. That was the person she had to contact. There were no other choices.

I got contacted for an interview two days ago. It will be this Sunday.

@good4college my friend got a call. i think you can get notified by both phone and email though

was it through his cell phone? because my land linehas been giving me problems.

stalkermama - i guess i wouldn’t necessarily say it went badly. my interviewer was really nice, she lived in upstate new york as a child, and she said that she’d give me a positive recommendation. however, thinking about it afterwards, i feel like i was so nervous that i rambled about stuff not particularly related to whatever the topic at hand was, wasn’t very articulate, and maybe seemed a bit over-energetic or even obnoxious. also, her saying that she’d give me a positive recommendation seems like it could’ve been something she says (kindly) to everyone.

i could be being a bit hyper-self-critical, as i often am in retrospect, but mostly i just felt that i needed to have a really excellent interview to set me apart with my lackluster rank etc., and i wish it had gone better. on the other hand, there wasn’t anything totally horrible about it, not really enough to have a negative impact, although i did have one kind of painful gaffe when she asked me what my weaknesses as a student are and i replied, honestly but probably not very wisely, timeliness and organization (i did go on to explain that the timeliness thing is related to my perfectionism/obsessiveness with certain assignments, but she did seem to take note of that). i dunno. we’ll see what happens, i didn’t have a very good chance of getting in anyway.

Axel,
Nothing you can do about it now. Don’t over think it. My daughter didn’t even tell me how her interview went. One thing I know for sure is that she is working hard on her RD school essays and she knows she will end up in a good place and it is not the end of the world!!

Has anyone in India received any interview notification?

Do I still have chances to get any interview? Now it’s Nov. 20th…
Maybe there’s no alumni around Beijing…(but I’m so suspicious about that)

Turns out I DID get an interview woo!! the first e-mail got lost in the mail, I guess it was just really bad luck. She emailed again 4 days later so not too much time lost.

Interview was last thursday, I think it went pretty well!! It was supposed to be 45 minutes, ended up being an hour and 40 minutes, we had a lot to talk about. The only thing I might regret is I didn’t talk so much about myself, but maybe it’s even better this way.
