Alumni interviews

Any suggestions for the interviews with the Ivies? My daughter has had a number of interviews this fall. All have gone well. Practice sessions definitely helped. However, this is the first one with an Ivy. The interviewer asked her to bring a copy of her transcript as well as resume. She has carried her resume to other interviews to help drive the interview onto familiar turf. I think she has the "Why homeschooling?" answer down . :-)

I get the sense that the interview will be evaluative as well as informative. I'll have her update her resume to reflect grades from recent college courses . They are relevant to her major so hopefully that will be a plus.

My kids never had any Ivy interviews, but I would just say to treat it like any other interview. She should try to relax and be herself, answer questions honestly and fully, ask any questions she may have (Research ahead of time to have intelligent questions that can't be answered by just looking at the website.). If she has already had a number of interviews, it shouldn't be as stressful as it would be if it were the first. That will help. I'm sure she will do fine!

I've never heard that the interviews are any different for Ivies. I don't know for a fact, however, since the two interviews my dd had were for Ivies.

Who is your daughter interviewing with? My dd's Brown interview went very smoothly with the interviewer being cool with the concept of homeschooling. The Yale interview was with someone who had never talked to a homeschooler before and didn't know how it worked or why someone who lived in our area (supposedly with a "world class" education system, at least as they keep saying) would do it.

She has ended up at Brown, which she preferred to Yale. Yale didn't accept her, but it could have been because it sensed the same thing. She had course work at Brown, recommendations from Brown professors, and her desired field is better covered there.

I haven't heard of any homeschoolers getting into Yale BTW, other than a concert violinist. Some other Ivies yes ...

My son interviewed with 4 Ivies and over the phone with Oxford.
He described the last one as the scariest half hour of his entire life!
On every interview he brought along a portfolio of his artwork which always seemed to move the conversation toward his academic and art interests.
His interview with a Princeton alumni (a very successful Afro-American female attorney was his worst experience.
He felt the interview was a bust and even entertained the notion of contacting someone at Princeton for a "do-over".
I kept telling him not to read too much into his perception of how it went and just leave it alone.
He sent the attorney a thank you note but for the next few weeks he kept reliving the conversation he felt he didn't have with her.

After he was accepted he called her to let her know he got in.
She said she wrote that he would be a wonderful addition to the freshman class.

Bottom line.....be yourself on your essays and in the interviews.

Thanks for the comments. DD's interview with Harvard went rather well. After their interview, the alum sat down with me for about 1/2 hour to discuss Harvard and so forth. We will see how it goes. She has one interview left and that is with Princeton. From what she understands the interview probably will not occur until late January or earlly Feb. She interviewed with the other schools to which she applied in the fall. She heard back from her instate safety at the end of December. They offered her a full-ride based on scores, academic performance in high school, and extra curriculars. She is pretty well-rounded for a math/science person. :-) She is waiting to hear from the Honors College there and another program. Now she is just waiting to hear from the other schools and figure out what will be the best fit for her.
