how rigidly do they conform to the 500 word limit. is it ok if mine is 600?

Not sure. Try slimming it down a bit, though. Do what you can.

Do you know how competitive this scholarship is?

Varies greatly by area, really. Some places are much less competitive than others.

Mhmm.

ameer - The alumni are not going to sit around and count the number of words. But that's thoughtful of you to ask. It's OK if you go over the limit but be careful because last year, some of the essays were truncated. If you go over the limit too much, some of your sentences might get cut off by the computer. But even if it gets truncated, a reader will get the gist of it, if it is well written. Remember - in the business of scoring applications and essays, it often depends on who you get as a reader which is all a matter of chance. We alumni wish everyone could be chosen so if there is something that distinguishes you from others, that would stand out. Be sure to be yourself though, and let your sincerity show through and you should be fine. A great attitude that comes through in the essay is always a big plus. And remember what your English teacher taught you "show, don't just tell".

DRab and Spirited - last year there were approximately 7,000 first year applicants for 750-800 awards given for the Alumni Scholarship. There are other scholarships an applicant is considered for so the numbers could be higher. This varies from year to year of course and dependent on alumni giving. Who knows, maybe this year will have far fewer applicants? Yes, DRab, some areas have a less competitive pool. To all - please don't get discouraged by the numbers because it is always amazing the wide variety of students who actually get the scholarships.

Agreed . . .
