So question... I know at other schools alumni status helps you out a lot. My grand-father graduated from NEU, taught there and had a scholarship named after him. Are these going to improve my chances of acceptance?

Well Northeastern has being really reaching out to Alumni lately. So I would say yes.

follow up question... is there a portion on the application where you list alumni relations?

I think they ask you on the application if you had any relatives that attended... I don't remember if you list them or not...I think it may have been a Yes or No question.

Sorry I just can't remember...I applied back in March

ooh... well i just started filling out my app. and it only ask if your parents went. bummer :( no help there. oh well

All hope is not lost... there should be several short answers/writing sections on there...and one of them will ask you why you're choosing Northeastern.

My suggestion...briefly mention your grandfather and your situation (no more than a sentence or two)...

More than anything else...you need to make sure you emphasize their co-op program and why it is the MAIN reason you'll better be able to achieve your goals...they REALLY look for that...

it also doesn't hurt to talk about the Boston area and the school's diversity (even if you don't really mean it)...

I talked about how diversity in the classroom can enrich a student's learning experience (and yes, i really meant it...but like i said even if you don't mean it, you should still think about writing it)...

let me know if you have any other q's about the application process (I know it seems daunting)... but I might be able to help.

Thank you very much for helping me with this Okay for my essay that I plan on submitting, I am a very good writer and have written an essay that really emphasizes my writing style. It is a little bit untraditional but represents me as a person and a whole. Should I stick with more of an abstract idea or would I be better off with a more traditional approach?

I was actually talking about the short answer questions that you have to complete. One of them asks about your hobbies and/or volunteer work, and which one is the most important to you. Another question asks you about why you want to attend Northeastern. The next section allows you to include any information about your work experience that you think may be relevant...in terms of being a more qualified applicant/hardworker/student/etc. And finally the essay question gives you several topics to choose from. I would suggest going with a traditional essay format...

I chose the last question on the topic list... it lets you pick a topic of your choice. I decided to write my essay about the controversial kelo v. new london case...mainly because it is something that I am very knowledgeable about...but also because it related to the major I applied for.

My advice would be this...

try not to stray away from what you're used to...do not take a big chance when writing your essay...you'll be fine

okay one more last question. Is it worth getting my hopes up for accetance with a 3.3 GPA, 22 on my ACT, 40+ hours of community service, Head of the Newcomers Club (4years), Vice-President of the School Store (2 years), Mitch Fischer Scholarship (best all around junior), 4 years varsity baseball (captain), 2 years varsity football, 5 years of travel baseball, and 2 1/2 years of working at the local pizza place (15+ hours a week)? I also live in the mid-west.. if it helps

ha as you can tell I really want to go to neu. ha thank you so much scom for all your help this is my last question... for now at least :)

If you can try to raise your act.. or try the sat and see if you do better on that.
