Am I a Good Fit for Hofstra?

I’m going to be an incoming college freshman in Fall 2016, so I am putting a lot of thought into the colleges I apply to. While it seems my test scores, academics, etc are up to Hofstra’s standards. I have a few questions:

I’m interested in the school of communication, specifically Public Relations. One of the biggest draws to this school for me is the proximity to NYC and the internship/potential career possibilities that offers me. However are these sorts of opportunities hard to come by? Obviously I plan to put my all into my schoolwork, I’m not a slacker by any means, but I also don’t want to get to the school and find out there are too few internship opportunities, especially for people in communications trying to head into New York City. Any insight on that topic would be appreciated.

I’m also wondering about the overall vibe of the campus, I’m hoping to hear from some current students or recent alums on this topic. While school and education are very important to me and my first priority, I also want to have fun in college. As bad as it might sound, Hofstra’s party scene, or lack there of, concerns me. Are there opportunities for people (especially under 21) to go out? I doubt I’ll have the money to go to bars every weekend, and frat parties, being as sketchy as they are, would ideally not be my only option.

Just some things that are on my mind. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there! I am a junior at Hofstra University currently with a minor in Public Relations actually. First of all, Hofstra encourages their students to intern. As Public Relations major, it required for you to have an internship for credit, where a professor will oversee the experience. The faculty, career center, and peers are all there for you to help you find the internship that you desire. It is not uncommon for Hofstra students to graduate with two or more internships. I would suggest that you go to our career center and utilize all of the resources they offer for you to prepare for your internship. So to answer your question, internships are not hard to come by at all! Additionally, your advising team can help you plan out your schedule for classes to accommodate the internship you may find. As for the campus vibe, there is always something to do on campus especially on the weekends. The multiple events and activities that the campus offers will most certainly keep you busy. I would not worry about not being 21; Hofstra has a lot of opportunities for you to explore the campus and the city! So all in all, I would say Hofstra could be a great fit for you.

I wish you luck in your college search and have a great senior year!
