My mom went to Brown med school. Does this make me a legacy, and to the same extent as those whose parents went to undergrad?
I doubt they would consider you a legacy in terms of applying to Brown undergrad. If your mom donates generously on a regular basis, perhaps it may make a difference. But for no one will legacy be the reason they get into Brown, so it’s not something for you to worry about.
Brown has an alumni college advising program available for children of Brown Alumni. They seem to define alumni broadly, but I would contact them and find out. They provide fantastic advising so see if you can use their resources.
Agree with both above. Your application will not be “earmarked” as legacy. However the closeness of the Brown connection in terms of activity (donations and activity with Brown of the parent or other relative, being back on campus with the parent for reunions, having a sibling at Brown, even having a godparent relative who is very involved in Brown volunteerism) all seem to count more in your application than just that legacy flag. And that makes sense as Brown wants to admit students who really know something about Brown and have more loyalty to Brown. PS: A higher than average number of legacy flagged students do seem to get wait-listed rather than outright rejected. Do they then get in off the wait list less or more? Have no idea.
