Am I Legacy?

This should be a really quick question, but something I’ve always wondered and something my dad doesn’t know the answer to. My dad went to Brown Med, and my uncle went to Brown Undergrad. Does that qualify me as a legacy applicant?

Yes, as long as any relative is an alumni of the university.

So will that actually help me out?

Brown mainly considers legacy to mean when your parents or siblings went there. Your uncle doesn’t count. I’m not sure about grad school – I’m inclined to think not, but I don’t know for sure.

Call them up and ask.

I don’t know fireandrain I remember when I was applying to Brown they asked for ANY person in your family that attended Brown… I would follow BuddyMcAwesome’s advice… call 'em up!

I definitely will. What kind of effect does legacy status have on admissions? Would it be significant?

do you have a building bearing your family’s name on campus?

if not, i doubt it will help you much.

Yes, I love researching into this. A legacy is two- three times more likely to get into the school of their choice. Their overall advantage is higher than URM or first generation college hooks. If a parent works at the school- the likelihood is even higher- that the child will get in.

Very .

Even in the admissions process of a school as competitive as Brown?
