Am I allowed to apply Early Decision to one school and Early Action to another?

I am applying ED to Northwestern, and since I am already done with my Georgia Tech application, I figure I might as well apply early action (the deadline is Oct 15). I just want to make sure that applying EA to Georgia Tech won’t interfere with my ED application to NU.

Early Decision does not allow you to apply anywhere else. EA does, however, that doesn’t matter in your scenario

@nitro11 is incorrect. You may apply ED to Northwestern and EA anywhere you want. However, if you are accepted by Northwestern then you are required to withdraw your applications to other schools.

What @suzy100 said. You just have to contact the other schools you’ve applied to (either ED or rolling admissions) and withdraw your application.

So just to confirm, I can go ahead and send in my Georgia Tech application Early Action, and my Northwestern ED app should be fine?

You should read the fine print on Georgia Tech’s Early Action description on their website. Unless it says specifically that early action to other schools is forbidden (this is sometimes called Restricted Early Action or Single Choice Early Action), then yes, you are welcome to apply to both schools. However, if the ED school accepts you, you are required to attend it (no matter how attractive your EA options may be).

What @TheGreyKing says is correct. However, if you are accepted to your ED school and have applied for financial aid, do NOT withdraw your other applications (or stop applying, elsewhere) until you have seen your FA package and find it acceptable. But as soon as you have seen the FA package and confirmed it is acceptable, you must withdraw all other applications. Think carefully – if you get into GT and ED at Northwestern, will you clearly want to attend Northwestern (even if GT has better financial aid)? If this is not clear in your mind, do NOT submit an ED application.

FIRST of all, you should run the NPC on the NW website, as it will give you an accurate estimate of your FA package.
If you CANT afford what NW says you will have to pay, do NOT apply ED in the hopes of hope a better FA package.
NO ONE should apply ED to ANY college unless they KNOW they can afford to go there.

@intparent I’m not eligible for financial aid, so that isn’t really a concern. Basically, I was already planning on applying ED to Northwestern as it is my first choice, and since I had already finished the Georgia Tech application, I figured why not apply EA. I just wanted to make sure that doing so wouldn’t affect my ED application to NU.

Nope, you are fine.

I apologize for the bad information. Learn 2 new things today. The process of Early? and don’t be posting if you don’t have the experience.
