i will be applying for the dean’s scholarship as well as the paul tulane one; i dont think im going to qualify for much need based financial aid. stats are as follows:
ACT: 36
SAT: 2240
GPA: 3.85
am i competitive for aid, and if so, does anyone know how much aid i could get? id like to try to get $20-30k a year if possible.
There are non-statistical things taken into account, but it still seems to be very heavily weighted on academic performance. That means GPA, SAT/ACT, and how challenging the schedule was until now and is for senior year. Now remember, these are the scholarships that every accepted student is automatically considered for. Usually your perfect ACT along with your excellent grades would get you the top award for this stage of the process I would think, unless that GPA is weighted and your schedule wasn’t so rigorous. If your unweighted GPA is lower than that then it is hard to say, although you would certainly get a good award still, I would think. There is some lack of clarity in that stat.
Oh, and it used to be easier to predict which award a student would get based on stats alone, and I am sure the admissions department still uses a guide that takes into account some balancing of GPA and test scores. But they also seem to be taking into account some other factors in borderline cases.
For the highest level scholarships (DHS, PTA, Stamps, Hainkle) you need these top marks to even “make the cut” for consideration. Then the quality of the separate application that includes either a project and recommendation (DHS, Stamps, Hainkle) or essays (PTA) are considered along with the other aspects of your resume.
OP, make sure that you show interest. With those high scores, assuming a rigorous schedule, they may assume you are using them as a safety and waitlist you.
will do ! @suzy100
im doing EA and i did a one on one info session with one of the admissions representatives (i ended up being the only student to show up)
is that enough interest ? what other stuff should i do to let them know that theyre not a safety ?
That should be good for showing interest. Especially since you were the only student to show up at your high school info session. That makes you memorable.
Yes, you are certainly in the running for the DHS as far as your stats. So now, as far as having a “good shot”, it depends on your project and the rest of your resume. For the 75 awards they will make, there will be about 7-10 times that many students that have the qualifying stats that apply for it. So the odds of getting one are about the same as getting into the most competitive schools these days. Don’t forget the Paul Tulane Award. There are 50 of those and they are also full tuition and fees.
BTW, applying for one or both of these full tuition awards is another strong way of showing you are truly interested. Generally speaking, a student that was using Tulane as a safety wouldn’t put in that kind of effort.
Interest is the one area where I’m worried. We couldn’t visit over the summer because my D was recovering from a major surgery, which she addressed in her application. She couldn’t attend a local event because of her school sport. However, she did participate in an online chat that Tulane hosted. She also did a lot of research for her Why Tulane essay.
A short email to her admissions person at Tulane explaining that she wanted to attend the local session but that she had a conflict due to a soccer/hockey/lacrosse… game would be appropriate. Not being able to visit NOLA I wouldn’t even mention. Lots of people can’t do that. Just a friendly note saying she is excited to apply is nice.
@fallenchemist She did email her admissions rep and let her know that she couldn’t attend and that she had already submitted her application. Thanks for all your advice.
