So, what if my father's father and grandfather went to a school (Wesleyan), and my great grandfather (father's grandfather) was a football coach there. Does this help me or does it not matter?

Does having a grandfather who went to a certain school help getting into that school? Yes, especially if he's still living.

It differs between colleges as to whether or not grandparents are included in the definition of legacy status. I recommend you contact Wesleyan and ask.

If your stats are competitive, having relatives that attended could help.
As you can see 13% to 16% of Wesleyan's last 5 Classes are Relatives of former students. But being a "legacy" is not going to make up for poor stats.

I guess you are a legacy due to a particular relative if the application form allows you to list that relative.

I think you count as a legacy. Usually on college applications, the schools ask if you have any relatives who went to the school. I put down my aunt and uncle for one school to which I applied, and I was accepted.

An aunt/uncle would never give legacy status. The possiblities are parents, siblings, grandparents, and employees of the college.

At most top schools only parents make you legacies unless the other relatives gave big money.
