Am I Considered the Child of a former member of Navy

A lot of colleges on their applications ask if I am a child of a former member of a member of the Navy or Marine Corps, which I am- my father served in the Navy when he was younger. Here’s the thing though, my father signed away his rights to me when I was 14, and for those of you who don’t know what that means that means he is no longer legally my father. That means he is completely out of my life and does not contribute financially at all. Am I still considered the daughter of a member of the Navy, or does the fact that he’s out of my life completely hinder that and should I not mark it on applications? Thanks!

Yes, you remain his biological child, regardless of his custody issues.

@cap your thoughts?

Yes you are. Just be careful if the question is being asked for scholarship and/or grant purposes as the school or agency may ask for the military member’s DD214. Since it may be difficult to get that from your biological father.

You are definitely the child of a former Navy service member. Whether you are whatever the school is looking for by asking this question is something you cannot know. You can honestly answer yes to that question and explain if ever asked for more information. Fair winds and following seas. ATS
