Am I crazy?

I need your help CCers please!

Basically, I am deciding between the University of Southern California Anneberg School for Communication and George Washington University's School for Media and Public Affairs.

THE FINANCIAL BREAKDOWN:
GWU - 32,000 per year renewable fin. aid scholarships
15,000 academic scholarship
47,000 total out of 55,000 per year paid for each yr

USC - HAVE NOT RECIEVED PACKAGE YET..BUT ANCIPATING TO PAY ANYWHERE FROM 20 TO 30,000 PER YEAR TO ATTEND ( based on other packages I have recieved ).
I will NOT be getting any merit scholarahips from USC, so im only anticipating partial help as far as fin. aid.

Am I crazy to want to go to USC/Is it worth going into 80-120,000 debt to go to USC? Please help!

General advice: it is NEVER good to go 80-120,0000 in debt, ever. How much of that 20-30,000 would you be able to pay? If it is all in loans, then it is definitely not worth it.

I’m from Michigan so hello btw lol:-) Um…well I’m anticipating that it will be 20-30,000 in strictly loans, yes…

Lol, hello.
Then no, I would definitely NOT recommend taking out about $100,000 in loans. It is a terrible way to start off your life after college.

Just out of curiosity, is there any reason why you didn’t look at in-state schools (UMich, MSU, etc)?

Well I got into both of those…and am dead set on NO MSU. UM was my next choice, but they offered me no financial aid (loans again)…which means I’d be going into 80-100,000 debt for UM anyway. And then GWU popped up w/ all this fin. aid so I kinda pushed UM out of the picture (most of my private schools have brought their cost down to equal UM)

That kind of debt would undermine your options for a long time.

OK so I should go with GWU?

You said you didn’t get the other package yet. Why not wait until you get it just to make sure it is about what you’re anticipating.

ok thanks any other advice?

I would say go with the better fi-aid package when available. Especially when there is this much money in debt involved, it would probably not be fiscally responsible for all those loans and could limit you in the future.

ok thank you.
i get both extremes when i ask ppl this question–

  1. go in debt it’s worth it/it can be paid back
    or
  2. that’s totally innapropraite go where u get most money.
    lol

This may not always be true, but you probably get answer #1 from students like yourself who have a school they LOVE and want to attend, and answer #2 from adults who have had to deal with debt and want to protect you (and all of the kids on the forum) from that.

If at all possible, get all the information before making your final choice. In the meantime, GWU is a great option! Good luck.

I am sure you have done the research and know if both could offer you the right majors…out here in the real world, I think they are roughly comparable in terms of reputation. If you were certain that you were going to be the next Steven Spielberg and were going to the School of Cinema, then USC might be worth it. But it sounds like GWU wants you and it is in a real interesting location and you will never be bored! I just don’t hear any compelling reason to go into debt but maybe USC will surprise you with some aid!
