Am i doing the math right? (penn stats)

I'm almost as pleased with this online drama as the Tiny Turtle is.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/1990/1155050676735rf5.jpg

awww...the turtle is cute!!!!

I hope the turtle gets in ED if I do too!

lol yea turtles are cool :) they will be the only survivors of the next world war :O

percy skivins - "lets say that 1250 were accepted in the ED round. This leaves 2600 accepted RD."

Penn says that 50% of the incoming class is admitted ED , meaning that 1250 matriculate in each round (ed and rd), meaning 2500 total.

1250 accepted ED
3985 accepted RD (when yield = 31.37%)

Jibjab-

Your math is wrong. If 1250 accepted ED + 3985 accepted RD, that would total 5235 acceptances to yield 2500 enrolled. That would be a total yield of 48%, while the true overall yield is 65% as you said in the beginning.

I'll give you a hint on the math, since you're still not getting it. Instead of doing the math on the yield percentage like you tried to do, try it with the inverse - let's call it the "overacceptance ratio". A yield of 65% means an overacceptance ratio of around 1.5 - you have to let in 3 applicants to get 2 matriculants. ED has an overacceptance ratio of basically 1.0 - to get one matriculant you accept 1 applicant. Take your original averaging formula from there and solve for the RD overacceptance ratio.

i sense some unwarranted animosity. anyway yeahhhhhhh that would be 48% yield. oops. good thing i'm a prospective engineering major (errrr engineering/business, but whatevs) :(

^That means you are supposed to be good at math, not bad.....

Good luck with this whole admissions thing ;)

oh oops i confused an RD # with an ED #.
REVISED:

50% of class ED
50% of class RD
2500/.65= 3846

1250 ED
2596 RD

1250/2596= 48%

100% yield ED
48% yield RD
65% overall

ahhh much better

venkater i was being sarcastic :)

48% is pretty good. Consider that some Penn admits are going to get into Harvard, others will get full rides elsewhere, nearly 50% yield is solid.

Harvard Is A P.o.s.!!!1

Don't forget that some of the RD yield are ED people who got deferred into the regular pool. You're no longer obligated to accept if they take you later, but probably the yield on deferred ED's is (I'm guessing much) higher than 48%, meaning the yield on non-deferred RD is lower than 48%.

Does anyone know how many ED's are deferred (vs. denied) & how many deferred ED's are accepted RD?

^There are so few of these that I doubt they affect the numbers much. Also, I doubt that everyone deferred from ED then accepted RD will marticulate. It is probably ~50%, just like the regular RD numbers.

For the Class of 2010:

Early Decision Applicants 4,120 Total
Admitted In December 1,181 (28.7%)
Total Deferred In December 1,285 (31%)
Deferred Applicants Admitted In April 159 (12%)

hi borium =)

:P

(10 char)

so you don't get mad at HER, you only get mad at ME!

its cuz im cute

Well, actually I'm getting tired of getting mad at everyone who misspelles my name. I want PEACE P <- white flag

why is the spelling of your name so important? lol
