I know that Pell grants are for students from low income families, which mine is not, however on my FAFSA I will be considered independent bc I am a ward of the state so in applying for a Pell Grant will they want me to report MY income (since I am 'independent') or my parents income? I dont know if being considered 'independent' on FAFSA means that you dont have an 'expected family contribution, does it?

I am not really sure how all of this works so any input would be great!

Were you a ward of the court after the age of 13? if yes, then you are an independent student and only your income assets will be used. However any monies paid on your behalf, must be listed on the FAFSA. If you have “no income”, it prompt a low income verification as the school will want to know where you live and how you eat everyday.

You may end up with an expected family contribution based on your income/assets.

If you’re a ward of the state, then you’d only use your income. Do you have income?

That said, a Pell Grant isn’t much (About 5600 per year) so it won’t pay for most colleges.

If you have high enough stats, you could get merit scholarships to supplement that or get into schools that meet need.

This student could get a Pell, plus the Direct loan which is more than for dependent students.
