Am I eligible for FAFSA?

High school senior working through college apps here. My family and I have lived in the US for over a decade; however, we haven’t received a greencard yet. I have an Alien Registration Number, I-94, and an ITIN, but no SSN. Is it possible for me to apply for FAFSA without a SSN? (If so, what would I fill in when it asks for my SSN?)
New to CC, thanks in advance for any help!

Information on FAFSA eligibility status is right here:

https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/eligibility/non-us-citizens

Thank you, I’m eligible! Do you know what I can fill in for the SSN portion since I don’t have one?

*Generally, you are an eligible noncitizen if you are one of the following:
•U.S. permanent resident, with a Permanent Resident Card (formerly known as an Alien Registration Receipt Card or "Green Card”)
•Conditional permanent resident (I-551C)
•Other eligible noncitizen with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the Department of Homeland Security showing any one of the following designations: “Refugee,” “Asylum Granted,” “Indefinite Parole,” “Humanitarian Parole,” or “Cuban-Haitian Entrant”
•A citizen of the Republic of Palau (PW), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (MH), or the Federated States of Micronesia (FM).

You can receive federal student aid if you are an eligible noncitizen. You must enter your eight or nine digit Alien Registration Number (ARN) on the FAFSA.

If your citizenship status has changed from an eligible noncitizen to a U.S. citizen, you should contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to update your citizenship status. If you do not update your citizenship status with the SSA, it could delay processing your student financial aid. To contact the SSA call 1-800-772-1213 or visit the Social Security Administration’s Web site at https://ssa.gov.*

@medxkhj

What makes you think you are eligible to complete a FAFSA and receive U.S, federally funded need based aid.

You are not a citizen. You are not a permanent resident. You don’t hold a green card.

What makes you eligible.

OP presumably holds an I-94 with one of the designations listed in post #3, this thread.

OP presumably holds an I-94 with one of the designations listed in post #3,<<<<<<<

Why is that presumed? An i94 is (was) just an entry document.

Because in the first post of this thread OP says that he has an I-94, and in post #2, after presumably seeing the I-94 designations that make an I-94 holder an eligible citizen for FAFSA purposes, OP says “Thank you, I’m eligible!”

@medxkhj - Your parents can use 000-00-0000 instead of an SSN. I expect you can too. My best guess would be that you will need to print out a paper copy of the FAFSA, complete that, and mail it in, instead of doing everything online. But perhaps it would be best if you ask the financial aid office at the place where you are applying to give you advice about things. I am tagging @kelsmom who is a financial aid officer. She should have ideas for you.

Wishing you all the best.

I still wonder what makes this poster eligible. Yes…possible…but o hope he doesn’t think he is eligible simply because he has an ARN.

  1. OP says that he has an I-94 ("Arrival-Departure Record").
  2. I-94 holders under certain designations (Refugee, Asylum Granted, Indefinite Parole, Humanitarian Parole, or Cuban-Haitian Entrant) are considered to be eligible noncitizens for FAFSA purposes.
  3. If OP has one of these designations, he's FAFSA eligible, right?

@BelknapPoint yes, your post 10 is very accurate.

I just hope the OP read this correctly and didn’t assume that because he has an ARN, he is eligible.
