Am i eligible for financial aid??

Hey guyz,

I have USA citizenship, but I haven't done high school. I studied secondary education and higer schooling outside USA.I have done O and A level, its a UK qualification which is similar to highschool.

I want to apply to a few universities in USA.
My parents have allready told me that they wouldn't be able to afford my expenses,

Can anybody please tell me , am i eligible for financial aid??

Yes, if you are a US Citizen you should be eligible for federal student aid. You would have to file the FAFSA. A list of federal programs with links to eligibility requirements and procedures can be found here:

As a citizen you qualify for Federal aid, but keep in mind that’s not a lot of money. Your parents will have to be very low income for you to get the big piece grant wise–the Pell Grant–which gives you about $5K/yr at most. After that it’s loans and work study which you will also need to qualify for and will depend on their income whether they believe they can afford to pay or not.

Except for Stafford loans - all who file FAFSA are eligible to take them, as long as they don’t exceed the cost of attendance (unlikely):)

Hey thanks ,

and If i apply for a student loan, will i have to repay it as soon as i graduate or until i’m able to get a job?

As a citizen you will qualify for financial aid. It all depends on the schools themselves as to whether your parents financials are such that they feel you should get money. Schools can determine this need, and few schools meet full need anyways. FAFSA is determines eligibility for federal aid but unless your parents income is very low, it is unlikely that you will qualify for the PELL and other grants determined by EFC. (expected family contribution). What your parents SAY they can afford or cannot has nothing to do with it. You may be eligible for a Stafford loan. You can defer payment on it. If you qualify by low family financials for the subsidized Stafford, you will not owe interest while in school. There are time schedules for all loans, and they are not determined by whether you have a job but they do give you a few months after graduation or leaving school.

well … the main issue…that im having is …

My parents and I are currently living in a developing county…

Eventhough… my parents are well off within the country… but if converted into US currency… then the chances of my parents contributing to my educational expenses are slim to none… seriously :P

Well… i guess only time will tell… about what type of aid …i am eligible for.

though i really hope i can get a pell grant…

Your parents’ income will be evaluated by US standards-- so if the income is generous by the standards of the country where you live, but near poverty level by US standards – then you would probably qualify for generous aid at a US University. The colleges don’t look at your expenses, just at the income and assets – and they apply the same formula to you as they would if your family was living in the most expensive city in the US.
