Am I eligible?

I have been in school since 2006, an associates in interior design and now for fashion merchandising. through the years I have always payed out of pocket cash and never received financial aid or loans. My last semester I got caught up with bills and couldnt pay off my tuition and finished the semester with a balance of about $900 and wasn't able to return to school to finish. I now want to finish school with only 4 classes left, one of them being a non credit course and do not have the money to pay the semester and my balance from my past semester. I am not too knowledgeable of the financial aid process, but I was wondering if I have a balance with my school already would I be able to file for financial aid and they add my remaining balance with my up n coming semester. I am from new york so I know I can also get tap and a pell grant as well as financial aid(fafsa). Just need a little guidance, thanks for reading.

You need to contact your FA office. I think the university would want to get paid for the previous semester’s work before they even attempt to schedule classes for you. You need to contact your school.

You cannot use current year aid to pay a past balance. Some private lenders will lend to cover a prior year balance, but federal regulations prohibit the use of federal loans for prior year balances.

If you have been in school since 2006 and already have one associate’s degree, how many credits do you already have? You may not be eligible for aid if you already have an excessive number of credit hours.

Thank you all for your responses, they all helped. Im just going to pay off my balance and file for financial aid, I was awarded a scholarship through my job. It doesnt support all my tuition but it all helps. Thank you again!
