Am I falling behind in the pre-med game?

Hi guys,

First, I want to introduce myself. I have been a lurker here on CC forum for a little while. I first joined when I decided that I wanted to transfer from my current school (Northern Illinois University) to a school in Chicago. I am currently a sophomore. I applied to the University of Chicago (rejected) and Loyola (still waiting).

I feel like I am falling behind the top students. I currently have a GPA of 3.72 but this is mostly from gen ed courses here at NIU. I am in the honors program but haven't done much (1 honors class so far). I am a psychology major. I have pretty much no ECs at the moment either. I wasn't quite sure of what I wanted to do when I entered college but I knew medicine was important to me. I realized that psychiatry and medical school is important and I believe it is within my reach. The only problem is that I came to this conclusion a bit late.

I have looked into research with professors as an EC but I am unsure about what will help me the most when trying to get into medical school. Can any of you refer me to a good guide or strategy on how to build my resume?

Thanks!

research is definitely a good option. but i recommend volunteering or interning at as many hospitals and doctors offices as possible. med-schools love it. you need as much patient interaction as possible. they expect you to have done some of this when you apply. also any leadership activies in clubs etc.

Thanks for the input!
