Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Multiplex Politics. A political debate club which tries to detox the toxic nature of politics and just focus on the issues We’ve organized voter registration drives and held a mock debate during 2016 (co-founder and current President) International Education Club Junior Classical League (Consul aka President) SHS International Thespian Society Model United Nations (Club VP and Director of Crises {a crazier form of MUN} for our conference we run, CNYMUN, two years running) Mock Trial (Witness on our trial team, 3rd in the state this year and State Champions 2 years ago) Student Council (Site-base team representative: pretty much I run town halls for the school every month) School Newspaper (Opinions Editor and Columnist) YMCA Leaders program member High School Ambassadors ‘Link Leader’ Some promotional work for a few campaigns Local town Republicans member Fall Play (Our Town:Howie Newsome, Hamlet: Guildenstern) Women’s History Month Assembly (Main planner) founder and VP of our Debate Team, NHS

Job/Work Experience: Tutoring Latin to middle schoolers. Camp Counselor at a YMCA camp. On-and-off volunteer at our local public library since 6th grade. Brief stint as a mascot for a Credit Union school outreach program. Summer Intern at Congressional Leadership Fund SuperPAC and at highly competitive Congressional Campaign ranked 2nd in the nation for calls and doors as the top intern there. Also work at the local State Park in the office (mostly consists of filing and filling out government paperwork)

Volunteer/Community service: Helped organize a couple of voter registration drives in my area (BOE said I got the most they’ve ever seen in one drive) Volunteer through YMCA Leaders program about 10 hours a month. Tutor struggling Latin students in the middle school. Volunteer at Public Library

Summer Activities: Worked as a summer camp counselor the past summer at a camp I’ve gone to since I was 8 years old. This summer, I’m going on a road trip across the continental US. Hopefully increasing my awareness of the various issues faced by those in our country. Working as an intern at the SuperPAC and the campaign office, both with very good letters of Rec I’ll be receiving. Just recently launched a website for my friend and I which is pretty much our commentary on American Politics: more of a passion project than anything.

Essays: Current Draft is about said cross country trip and how it’s allowed me to grow closer to nature but also experience our nation, preparing me for a lifetime devotion to public service.

Working on an old one: People often think of language as a connector, something that brings people together by helping them share experiences, feelings, ideas, etc. We, however, are interested in how language sets people apart. Start with the peculiarities of your own personal language—the voice you use when speaking most intimately to yourself, the vocabulary that spills out when you’re startled, or special phrases and gestures that no one else seems to use or even understand—and tell us how your language makes you unique. You may want to think about subtle riffs or idiosyncrasies based on cadence, rhythm, rhyme, or (mis)pronunciation.

Teacher Recommendation: My MUN coach, Psychology and Econ teacher, and politics club advisor. I spend almost everyday after school with him debating policy. He’s gotten progressively liberal since 2016, and I’ve grown more classically liberal (read: libertarian) 10/10 (I forecast)
My student council advisor and APUSH teacher. Had a rough start to the year but have earned each other’s respects and wants to help me convey my opinions in the most constructive outlet. 8/10
Counselor Rec: We’ve been fast friends since she started this school year; so I’m expecting great things.
Additional Rec: I have a lot of people I could ask. Probably something through the internships or my YMCA Advisor
Interview: Ready to ace them!

Applying for Financial Aid?: Hell yeah
State (if domestic applicant): New York
School Type: public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Just got into the $100,000 bracket!
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My great-aunt is a mathematics alumna.

So thoughts?

Are you applying EA, ED or RD?

Since I can, I’m applying EA

Yes you have a decent shot at EA, if you don’t get in EA I think you would have to convert to ED2 to have any chance.

Getting rejected isn’t your biggest problem. It’s getting in and finding out you can’t afford it. Private schools are best for very rich, or very poor people. Rich people can afford the tuition. Poor people get more financial aid. Your income falls into middle-class territory. Try using the Net Price Calculator for UChicago and that should give you a rough idea of how much you might get. BUT…it’s not a guarantee, and it’s not uncommon for schools to lowball you at the last minute. They have plenty of wealthier people on the waitlist, should you decide not to attend. Keep a few affordable back-up schools.

Test scores are a plus. I found myself being drawn in to reading your profile. The participation in Latin, student council, music, and public affairs shows the broad range of interests often found at UChicago. I think you have a very good chance.

Thanks so much for the support! I was really drawn to UChicago because of the diversity and convergence of thought and how it reflects my very quirky interests.
